With the generation likely coming to a close, it's time to fully evaluate the Mazda CX-5 for old time's sake AND to discuss how it still has what it takes to face the newer Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Hyundai Tucson and countless others.

The fact that this particular model is still assembled in Japan put me over the top to buy my 2023 CX 5 Carbon Edition. I love it!!

A word about trims. I'm in the Chicago area. Back in early September I bought a 2024 CX-5 Premium in Deep Crystal Blue Mica for my wife...absolutely beautiful and no paint surcharge! Got it at $1, 000 below MSRP. It only had wheel locks, all weather mats and a rear step pad as required accessories (all of which were fine with me). Many come with installed roof rails which not only cost $450 but to me actually detract from the car. There are many other port installed options like mud guards, cargo mats, privacy covers, seat guards you name it which become part of the sticker price so trying to get what you want the way you want can be a challenge. I think I just got lucky. It was in transit and arriving in a week.

Couldn't see going for the next step up Premium Plus trim for an additional $2, 700 as only a heated steering wheel interested her. Didn't need wireless Apple/Android, cell phone charger, heated rear seats heads up display etc. But that's a personal preference. I also I drove both the Turbo and the Non Turbo prior to purchase and the Non Turbo is plenty quick especially in sport mode. She recently caught herself going 80 down the expressway not realizing it since the car is so quiet. So that tells you a little about sound insulation as well as power.

It is a wonderfully designed, well thought out car both inside and out. The workmanship is impeccable. The interior is very luxury like. It's been around for quite a while so thoroughly tested. In my opinion it is one of the best deals out there in this crazy market. I say, if it fits your needs, my recommendation is...buy one!

I agree 100% with your last suggestions, increase the rear seating, improve seat comfort, and provide a hybrid.
I've owned the 2023 Turbo for over a year and completely enjoy it. Those 3 items are my only complaints.

We plan to buy one of these for one simple reason - reliability. The powertrain dates back to 2014 on the previous generation CX-5 which carried over with the last redesign to this version in 2017. With 10 years of experience building the four cylinder engines with a 6 speed transmission, this car is virtually guaranteed to last at least 200, 000 with few problems. I have bought my last few cars this way and every time the car lasts 200, 000 no problem. 2006 Saab 9-3 lasted 195, 000 and I sold it - the second owner has the original powertrain with 270, 000 now. Still own 2013 Subaru Legacy H6 engine with 5 speed automatic now with almost 150, 000 and no problems. Also a 2018 Buick Envision with the 10 year old turbo engine and 6 speed automatic with 79, 000 and no problems. Plan for all of these to last 200, 000. note the Honda CR-V you cannot get fog lights - living on a mountain that gets fog and snow, this is a definate no for me.

It's rare that I agree 100% with a vehicle video review, but I do in this instance. I've been driving Mazdas for over 20 years now, and after test driving the new 6th Gen CR-V, I was ready to jump ship and get one. Why didn't I? The CR-V not having a spare tire really irked me, and no ventilated seats (because Florida), but then Mazda offered 0% for 60 months on a new CX-5. I simply couldn't pass it up. 7th Mazda is officially in the books. I went for the Turbo Premium, and I'm not looking back :)

I purchased the 2024 Select trim Platinum Quartz color. It simply is a classic. The fact is it is fun to drive and handles great. It sells for thousands less than a similar SUV. It’s a SUV that drives like a sports car.

Making it an even greater value proposition, they're offering 0% APR for up to 60/72 months in the States.

I purchased my 2022 Mazda CX-5 premium plus new, I'm really impressed with this as it's my first Mazda. It's been a perfect daily driver for me

If the CX-50 had an rear independent suspension or if the next gen CX-5 became a little wider. Visually the CX-50 wins because of the extra width but I'd rather have the made in Japan build quality of the CX-5

I love that he points out things that could improve or things that other manufacturer comes with. It helps you make a decision on what is best for you. Most reviewers just point out that they believe is good

I’m on my third cx5 in a row. I enjoy it more than my Mercedes GL. Great value.

Great review. I agree with all of your points, except for your take on the seats. I absolutely love the leather and lack of bolstering. Gravity on my caboose in the seat and the limits of the engine and handling to keep me in the seat fine. The problem with bolstering at this price range is that the raised door-side edge will get constant contact as the driver gets in and out of the car, which breaks down the foam underneath and "deflates" the bolster. The competition's leather, both in quality and unnecessary bolstering, are enough for me to eliminate them from contention. The unaspirated, front-wheel driver models drive smooth with surprising power for daily driving tasks.

My niggles: Small gas tank. Odd heating/cooling/thermostat issues, covered under warranty for now. A bit of a trek to the nearest dealership for service.

I just FINALLY took delivery of our new 2024 CX5 Signature . We LOVE it
I’m sure that you must have had the front seat all the way back ( for your driving position ) when you tested the back seat space .
My son is over 6 ft and he fits well into the rear seats without any legs left or right of the front seat. In fact he had 4 inches to spare !
I have watched MANY CX5 videos since we ordered our vehicle in March and I think yours is the best one out there. ( although a winter one would have been great too)
Well, ….as they USED to say …..ZOOM ZOOM. 😊

The rear seat backs recline about 1.5 to 2 inches. That helps a bit for taller people.

Jumping in on the ride commentary… my dad is very picky about a quiet and smooth ride and, after only a few days driving it, he thinks the CX-5 is better than the Subaru Outback we traded for it. I do wish the rear had more room (our 2016 CR-V wins for “trunk” space).
