How to sail - Reefing a Sail

Learning to sail will mean you must know how to reef. Reefing is the term used to describe the action of reducing he amount of sail area. By reducing sail size in a controlled manner the boat will still sail but with less drive from the sail. The benefit to the sailor particularly when learning is that the process will allow you to sail in a wider range of wind conditions and perhaps sail on windier days where a capsize is very likely if you don't reef. This short video will help you to see how a modern sailboat is reefed and get the best out of your sessions as you learn how to sail

Reefing ashore is easy. Try to thread all those lines through the reefing points in a wind Force 4. With a small boat you may capsize. Even in a big boat you may run into trouble working at the end of an untamed boom. Therefore, all lines should be attached before leaving the shore.

Nice vid, but it's about reefing, yet you're mentioning a whole bunch of other terms (boom, halyard, clew, etc) that if known then the listener probably already knows about reefing?
Just my thoughts here.

Is there a faster mechanism on a larger sailboat such as a tayana 37 where you just roll the sail and lock the roller or something?

The technique demonstrated seems overly model-specific.

I'm supposed to be able to do this in a rocking boat in a rising wind?
