The Flowers of the Forest
A lament for the army of James IV, the flower of Scottish manhood, slain with their king on the field of Flodden, September 1513. The composition of this song began with a fragment of a very old ballad. Mrs Patrick Cockburn of Ormiston drew on this fragment to write a full song. Then in the mid 18th century Miss Jane Elliot, daughter of Sir Gilbert Elliot of Minto, Lord Chief Justice Clerk of Scotland, drew on Mrs Cockburn's work to make this lyric a much finer piece of work.

'The pipe tune is well known to anyone who has attended a Remembrance Day service in Scotland, but the song is all too seldom heard nowadays.'
The Scots had in 1513 invaded England to support their allies, the French.

On 9 September 1513 the Scots army, under King James IV, faced the English forces of King Henry VIII under the command of Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey. The battle was ferocious and bloody - men were felled by artillery, arrows, pikes, bills and swords. Around 14,000 men died, including James IV, the last British king to die in battle.

In 1968, when I was 15, the chap who sat next to me at school was killed in a mountain climbing accident. I had four days in which to learn Flowers of the Forest, and then stood at the graveside and played it (solo) on the pipes as the coffin was lowered. It still stands out as one of the most difficult things that I have ever done. Although I haven’t played the pipes for years, I think I could still play it.

Just to say, this beautiful Lament is played for each Canadian who is brought home from Afghanistan or where ever they serve, when they land in Canada. As they are carried from the Aircraft to hearst the lone piper plays this lament on the tarmac. It is a very heart felt and a tear is many a eye.

I played Flowers of the Forest at the funeral of Sailor Malan, a South African World War II fighter pilot who died in 1963, aged 52 years old. Although I was pipe major at the time, I have not played the pipes for years. Last year my precious daughter died... and this beautiful Scottish lament brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it because it reminds me of all the beautiful people, including my daughter, who died far too young

In memory of the 10 Guardsmen of 2nd Battalion Scots Guards who fell in the Battle of Mount Tumbledown, Falkland Islands 12-13 June 1982, your sacrifice will forever remembered.

I'm a man from Germany and I like bag pipes as if I were a Scotsman. During the last days I heard this song very often and thought of my dead parents and all the beloved friends that are gone and forgive me but I never can stop the tears running over my face. In this case all people are equal. Thanks for this beautiful music.

We scattered my Grandads ashes at Gamecock Barracks today (Formerly RAF Bramcote). Just as we did, a lone Piper appeared and played Flowers of the forest. I'm crying as I type this. Thank you so much 30 Signals regt for all you did for an old Comrade from the RAF today.

Sad and beautiful song. Just now played as the Duke of Edinburgh was laid to rest. Always brings me to tears.

Bagpipes really make your emotions go into overdrive. From goosebumps, back hair standing, and even swollen eyes. Amazing they truly are

Just listened to this at an ANZAC Dawn service. Couldn't help but think of all those brave souls who gave their lives in service of their land. Thought of Her Majesty, Elizabeth II and her funeral service, and her love for this tune. Thought about how lucky we are to live in peace.

Lots to think about and be grateful for on ANZAC Day.

Ever since I went to Scottland on a brief vacation, I feel like I've left my heart there. The hills, the silver rivers, the cold seaside, the wonderfull people. I miss it all so much it hurts.

An amazing piece that goes beyond nationalities. When I hear it I think of and mourn all the soldiers around the world who died in foreign lands and never came home.
