Kaleido 3 is here... in prototype form, at least.
E INK's Tokyo R&D Lab has released a new device that they are testing in-house.

It is running Kaleido 3 AND it folds!

I love how thin it is, but I think that the automatic page turn thing is actually really inconvenient.

Now this is so cool! I would love to see a phone with a colour E-ink screen inside and a regular screen in the outside! Would make so much sense! Can't wait for more! 🤯🤩

I would love a 10-13" color eInk that folds hamburger-wise. You could read it normally or in partially folded landscape like a paperback and it would be way more portable (and would hopefully protect the screens in transit, too). Obviously this is just a proof of concept so I don't expect them to require you to actually fold it in the real model--it's a nice gimmick but I agree with others I would get annoying unless it just required a quick flick.

I don’t need a 10” - I’m all in on my iPad Pro in regards to notes, creativity.. etc.

Reading wise… my Kindle Oasis is God. However, I would get rid of it, for a *similar size* color e-reader where B&W reading doesn’t take a big hit.

I watched your *Nova Air C vs. Kindle* Nova Air C -> did not leave me confident. Seems like colors don’t really pop & b&w reading takes a big hit.

Still waiting, for a color e-reader, to buy from your website, to show support.

I like what I'm seeing. I mean my response to the title was basically 'so what? E-ink is already inherently foldable' but the other features are good and I wouldn't mind seeing something come out in that particular format. Maybe a little wider unfolded? The better color resolution is definitely a good thing. Needs faster refresh as well.

As in 2018, Plastic logic was already able to achieve 500ppi in black and white, I am wondering if they could improve the color resolution to ideally more than 300ppi, but 250ppi would already be a good step-up.

Also still try to increase color saturation to get much closer to the eye popping colors of their E-ink Spectra line of products.

I am really dreaming of a very thin (1mn to 2mn), semi flexible (like a credit card), color and >10-inch device that can magnetically attach to a fridge magnetic (like fridge magnets), or anywhere and that would harvest electricity from WIFI…

As of 2022, there are still many very costly technical challenges to solve before getting there :(…

The only merit I see in this direction in the technology is hiding the page refresh. I held back wanting an e-reader for years because the black-to-white refresh on page turning was just jarring to me, so I stuck with a tablet. Had this existed years ago before I understood why e-ink works as it does, I think I may have actually wanted this.

Folding is great. But not desirable. However, Kaleido 3 isnt doing more than kaleido 2. Its offering better color saturation- and I believe thats only due to the new lighting. Its still using the CFA which can only output 4096 color at 100ppi and B&W is 300ppi. A single Graphic novel ( Cbz ) can contain pages that display up to 1million colors. E-ink has so far to go.... sigh.

Nah. No value yet imho. Screen's too fragile. Can't do note taking using it. 🤷‍♂️
