John, Rich and Alex reconvene for this week's DF Direct Weekly, talking about the new PS5 CFI-1100 model, whether Sony's $10 PS4 to PS5 upgrade policy is justified, plus discussing Alan Wake and Quake remasters!

00:00:42 New PS5 model
00:11:14 Horizon Forbidden West pricing confusion
00:21:17 Alan Wake Remastered
00:32:18 Quake Remastered

00:52:47 DF Content Discussion: Patreon update and retooling.
00:55:38 DF Supporter Q1: Would you rather a theoretical PS5 Pro doubled the computer units to 72 or added some kind of machine learning core for better AI upscaling?
01:03:58 DF Supporter Q2: What are the exact differences between mesh shaders and primitive shaders?
01:06:25 DF Supporter Q3: Is getting a reasonably optimised performance from newer PC games starting to require increased hobbiest/technical knowledge again creating a higher barrier to entry for new PC gamers?
01:18:07 DF Supporter Q4: With console reviews of late you often mention running a game not at the maximum resolution supported by a console. This confused me somewhat in that having my Series X connected to a 4K display and then setting output to 1080p just gives me a poor quality image
01:24:04 DF Supporter Q5: DLSS and performance drawback/gains
01:26:47 DF Supporter Q6: Are there any plans to include Crysis Warhead in the Crysis Trilogy collection? If not, why?
01:28:28 DF Supporter Q7: Richard does not seem as attracted to older games, despite the fact that he lived and worked through basically the entire era of 2D gaming. Why?

The dog segment with Rich was incredible and top notch content

I really love that you guys are leaning into the memery. The “BESPOKE” text and background sounds that flared up when John said it was fantastic

Rich should totally take some holidays, too! Don't burnout!

This generation of consoles isn't even a year old, you can barely even get one, and someone is already asking about a mid-generation upgrade, to 8K potentially? Absolutely ridiculous.

The "Dogital Foundry" bit killed me.

A remaster without ray tracing or HDR is hardly a remaster at all. Truly, what is the point here with Alan Wake? Especially Alan Wake because the entire game is built around the flashlight mechanic. HDR and RTX should be a given in this game.

I appreciate digging into the detail of HDR support for remakes/remasters. This is something I feel is a *really* important detail for things like Sonic Colors, the BIoShock Collection from a few years ago, etc where neon glows and dark detail being leveled-up can be a revelation.

Wow, the Golden Girls theme was impressive. People should watch Golden Girls, it was WAY AHEAD OF ITS TIME, LOL

I can't believe my eyes! Little Big Adventure is risen from the dead after what feels like a lifetime.. i don't know what to say other than i love this game so much. LBA2 was the first gift given to me by my late dearest friend, i can't imagine what would he say if he lived to see LBA3.

I hope it hit big and i hope we see more games from those days rising, games like Alone in the Dark, Ecstatica, ..

It's funny, i love digital and all that but there was something magic about going to the store, getting a single game and then just playing the heck out of that.. i suppose its also about being a kid and being able to pour 100% of your free time into something, like when you were a kid, video games was like magic, but also more real in a sense, you were able to immerse yourself more..
As a grown up i guess it's harder to get into that frame of mind that left such lasting impressions of games we played as kids

As a commodity buyer myself. The price of copper has gone up almost 90 percent. So I can see why Sony would modify the PS5 to make the heatsink smaller.

That got legit emotional for the last question about retro games and hardware. I really appreciated what all 3 of you had to say about it

the main problem with Austin is the the video title say "new PS5 is worst". It was really bad faith from his side to get the clicks, but it worked.

My belief is there are two primary issues with Warhead.

1: Like Alex says, it is highly possible the source files were lost. And while reconstruction is possible, it's a significant effort beyond simple porting. Beyond the maps themselves you have some new engine tricks they added to make the train mission work, for example.
2: I think there's politics around the game's semi-external development at Crytek Budapest. This isn't something concrete, but Crytek weirdly ignore Warhead, and they've ignored it for a long time. Which sucks because Warhead is great.

With not getting attached at the end … it’s true the older you get the less time you have … 10- 15 years ago I gamed all night … now I’m lucky to game occasionally

It was gradual, my family and life just kept taking more and more time. I miss it but I’ve got too much to do.
