This song is about war, and in the French war, they wore red scarves and taking it off was considered treason. Michal took his scarf off like the rebel he is. (From what I have heard, lol.)

I love this song! Also, everyone keeps saying this song is about war, but this song is up for interpretation, and I love dogs. So here's my interpretation:

"I was following the pack" = A sled dog following his pack.

"All swallowed in their coats" = The dog's winter coats

"With scarves of red tied 'round their throats, to keep their little heads from falling in the snow" = The dogs are wearing red bandanas so that the sleigh musher can see where they are at all times.

"And I turned 'round and there you go! And Michael you would fall!" = The musher, who is apparently named Michael, fell out of the sleigh. Probably down a cliff or something equally dangerous.

"And turn the white snow red as strawberries in the summertime." = Michael died. And the dogs could do nothing about it.

and my theory of this song:


a boy named Michael and his friends went out hiking on a snowy day, in winter. Michael was following his friends around but got lost. ( “I was following the pack” part) the “red scarves” lyrics are suspiciously specific, so that has to do with this. this possibly could symbolize blood or scars on his neck, as that’s where this comes from. let’s say he went into the wild and to the mountains, and some animal like a deer, or any animal that hangs out in the cold or near the mountain, attacked him whilst his friends split up and that’s where he got a huge, deep cut in his throat/neck, explaining the “red scarves” part. as his friends are still far away since they split up, he turns around and around looking for them. ( “And I turned ‘round and there you go” ) he eventually moves his neck too much and the cut gets bigger and bigger, deeper and deeper as he moves. the cut finally goes all the way around and his head falls off, eventually explaining the “to keep their little heads from falling in the snow” and “and turn the white snow red as strawberries” parts. the “in the summertime” may show that when the friends find Michael’s body and head, they get really sad and upset, and start thinking of him in summer. (it may also mean they got depressed in the summer.)
