When I was younger, I didn't understand why that couple got booed and not even considered for a prize as I thought they slayed the floor with their routine. As I became an adult and started getting to know people who grew up in New York at that time, I found out how racist many of the residents were, especially in Brooklyn. This scene (and movie - as great as it is) was proof.

When I saw this kouple dance in this movie, I was just amazed at their khoreography. The energy and moves were fit for the song.  They couldn't have selected a better song to compete with.

Hard to believe, but the dancers who performed the "Dance Contest" scenes were not "credited." After checking IMDb, I'm pretty sure the Puerto Rican team was Adrienne Framet and Joe Pugliese. Still trying to identify these talented folks
