═════════════════════ 10 Fun Facts About Dolphins ═══════════════════════

1. Dolphins play a large part in mythology and many different cultures. Dolphins were very common throughout Greek mythology and were seen as helpers of the humankind. They were seen in palaces in the Minoan civilisation, they were also symbolised in various coins that have been found from Ancient Greece depicting a man or a child riding the back of a dolphin.

2. Dolphins communicate through whistles, pulses and clicks. The whistle is used to communicate with other dolphins to just have a chat, but what is really interesting is that each dolphin has a unique whistle that helps them identify one another, basically the dolphin equivalent of a name.

3. In late 2013 there were experiments that showed that bottlenose dolphins can remember whistles of other dolphins they had lived with after 20 years of separation. This feat of memory is the longest known in any species other than humans. While elephants and chimpanzees probably have similar abilities, they just haven't really been tested to this extent yet. So for now bottlenose dolphins hold the crown of the best memory in the animal kingdom.

4. The U.S. Navy trains dolphins under the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program, which is based in San Diego, California. Military dolphins were used by the U.S. Navy during the First and Second Gulf Wars. Currently there are about 75 dolphins that are in the program. These cute creatures are trained to perform tasks such as ship and harbor protection, mine detection and clearance, and equipment recovery.

5. When a dolphin goes to sleep they have a tail kick reflex that keeps the dolphin's blowhole above the water. What's interesting is that anesthetized dolphins initially show this tail kick reflex which slowly subsides according to the depth of anesthesia, coming to a complete stop with attainment of surgical anesthesia. On recovery from anesthesia, the dolphin starts this swimming motion again on the operating table in the process of regaining consciousness.

6. The killer whale or orca is the largest member of the dolphin family, dwarfing all other species in the family. Females weigh in at 3-4 tonnes, and males weigh in excess of 6 tonnes. What is even more scary is they are the quickest member of the dolphin family and are able to swim at speeds of up to 55km/h.

7. Female dolphins assist in the birth of another’s baby dolphin. If the birth is particularly difficult the dolphin that I suppose would be in the “midwife” role, will often help pull out the baby. Other dolphins in the pod, including bulls, will actually swim around the mother and midwife during birth, to protect her.

8. A baby dolphin is born tail-first to prevent drowning. This is because the birthing process is arduous and the baby dolphin if birthed head first will have its blowhole exposed. After the baby dolphin is birthed the mother breaks the umbilical cord by swiftly swimming away, she then immediately returns to her baby and take it to the surface to breathe.

9. A 260 lbs dolphin eats approximately 33 lbs of fish daily without gaining any weight, which would be the same as a 180 pound human eating 22-23 pounds of steak everyday.

10. Dolphins eat various different types of food from squid to fish and even other marine mammals. When I say marine mammals can fall prey to dolphins I don't mean bottlenose dolphins or the various other smaller species. I am sure many of you connected the dots and realised I was speaking of the orca. The largest and baddest member of the dolphin family.
