HOW TO DRAW A STRAIGHT LINE

How to draw a straight line. Stephen Travers reveals three tips to drawing straight, freehand lines. His architectural landscapes have given him plenty of practice, and these are his secrets to clean, straight lines, drawn without a ruler.

There is another tip I find very useful: draw your lines with constant velocity. Maintain the same velocity throughout the line. Usually I do not tilt my paper because often it is not practical. I've learnt to draw lines at any angle. The most difficult ones are horizontal lines. You have to try yourself the position of arm and pace that works better for you for each angle. The higher the velocity the most elegant and clean will be the line. But it must be precise, so for horizontal lines I have use a somewhat slow velocity whereas for 45º I can draw at a higher velocity.

I learned about moving your whole arm from calligraphy practice. It does give you more control of the up and down strokes, allowing them to flow more naturally. I had such an Aha! moment when I discovered it.

Thanks @stephentraversart. This just popped up on my feed. I use a sketch book and move the book round to the most comfortable position. I'm left handed and so to get the smoothest line I should draw from right to left (in to out) - which is why I should not watch right handers draw as I tend to mimic actions. I have to make a conscious effort to mirror them if I'm to use the whole arm.
