Kolkata: “Nabanna” Protest Turns Violent, Tear Gas Fired, Students Lathicharged | RG Kar Rape-Murder

In the Indian city of Kolkata, violent protests erupted over the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case. The police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse thousands of protesters who were marching to Nabanna, the West Bengal State Secretariat. Officials heavily fortified the secretariat with barricades, which were all brought down by the angry protesters. The protest is led by an unregistered students’ group demanding the resignation of West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. They are angry over the “incompetent” government which failed to take swift against the accused who brutally raped and murdered a doctor at the RG Kar Hospital on August 9. In the early to late 80s, Calcutta used to experience a lot of political protests as a result of which there were huge traffic jams to let various processions passed through budy city intersections.
However, they were hardly ever violent under the Basu administration.
This sudden flare up into violence of what seemed like a genuine demand for justice in modern Kolkata is rarher alarming with costs to both lives and limbs real possibilities.
Moreover, it fills up jail and creates tonnes more legal works for the state justice department.
Thus, peace is more desireable.
Moreover, when the smoke clears it's often the poor coomoners who would end up paying the highest prices in legal fees and police cases which often make jobs harder to come by.
