Post Meet: How to Shoot Better for the Edit

In our very 1st Live Stream I discuss one featured topic and take your questions.

Here is the email by Joel that inspired the topic:

"Hey, I just wanted to tell you how grateful I am for giving out the information that you do during your videos. It is so hard to find someone who talks about how films make you feel emotion vs technical advice. I am a Las Vegas Based Cinematographer... The reason I bring this up is because i've been watching your channel for the last year and one of your videos "How To Edit A Documentary Film" Caught my attention specifically. You mentioned you only put what catches your emotion and any other shots didn't matter. I guess what I'm asking is to understand that a little more. I as a cinematographer only give you what I think catches emotion for the story and I want to make sure anything I give the editor does that. I also don't want to wasted time and money for shots the story doesn't need. In your experience with cinematographers, is there anything I can do that can help that? Maybe some do's and don'ts? I'd really appreciate any advice. Thank you for continuing your channel. It's refreshing seeing someone so interested in emotion and as determined as you. Thank you, Joel"

I'm excited to meet you all.

I'm an animator, trying to make a short film, which means I'm all the roles, and this is so fantastically helpful, thank you!

Thanks for making this video. It's going to help a lot. I really love your point about listening to the actors and don't think shots, think story. I love that kind of mind set and it makes a huge difference on set and in the editing room. P.s. - I'll become a patron soon. Great stuff!

Love the tips. Having just finished my second documentary short film - I cannot believe how much B roll can play in the final edits and it seems there is never enough.

Didn't get a chance to watch this stream while it was live, but so glad I watched it nonetheless. Sven, I hope you have a way of notifying us when the next stream will happen, because I'd love to catch it to ask a few questions.

I all but never use tail slates. This is precisely so that the camera does not cut too early or risk missing that candid moment.

Cinematographers: when filming people in reality, actually listen to what the people are saying. Often there’s potential for a great sound grab but the cameraman cuts too early because he was only tuned into the shot not what they are saying.

Thanks for all the tips. Just one friendly tip for you - if you are not editing the recording of the live show before publishing, it might be a good idea to let offline watchers seeing the chat replay too.

Enjoyed these tips, very useful. Another YouTube channel I like is “Lessons From the Screenplay” which I think is great for understanding more about storytelling. I also like Neumann Films, and StudioBinder is a channel producing some really nice videos on a variety of topics on film-making.

As just a creator for YouTube, I do every aspect of production and have come to really appreciate making my presenter self hold off on dialog until I'm positioned at the start of a shot and holding position at the end of the shot to help my editor shelf later.

I've not been involved in any shoots with multiple people. Why would there be competition between the cinematographer and sound guys and disregarding the slate? That seems odd to me. Shouldn't they all be on the same team trying to help each other make the best movie/video possible?

When you're talking about "holding the shot", are you talking about candid film-making like street photography? I'm not a cameraman so I would assume in studio or on set you just make your shot for the whole take and don't bounce around because that's not the job...

Hey, Michael Bay is fine. I guess me being an amateur I shoot and edit the same way. Chaos! hahahaha! And yes, hold the shot. Speaking from experience.
