The biggest myth about IAS officers is they're all-powerful

The IAS is one of the most competitive jobs in the country. It retains much of its pre-independence aura. IAS has to perform in a completely different environment today. Popular beliefs about IAS are almost bipolar. The biggest myth about the civil service is that it is all-powerful. Politicians call the shots a lot more than before

Watching this interview urges and tempts me to read his book, and try to understand the genuine nature of the Indian bureaucracy.

India needs administrative reforms more than economic reforms.

Any politician can make an IAS feel like handicapped any time. Very very unfortunate.

I sensed great disappointment in the interviewer's tone, when the guy didn't say anything bad about the Modi Government.

People in comments are talking like they themselves are the lady justice... Like only we are good honest citizens and everyone else in power is corrupt... Come Any country is as good as it's citizens.... Average out the character of 1.3 billion people and you have got India. If every person starts caring about our nation even a little bit more we can have a huge India has everything resources, manpower, culture, diversity--- just that we miss one part true love for India-- otherwise we wouldn't be littering everywhere (see the "mother" Ganga), following the rules (as simple as queues) and so on... In simple terms WE ARE THE MOST HYPOCRITIC people on the Earth. AND WE DO NOT HAVE GUTS TO ACCEPT THE REALITY.

Lateral entry is definitely important as like Medical service can't be controlled by a person who is not expert in medicine.

This was a calming interview. Questions were good and responses were insightful.

It's better to end VIP culture. Equality is absolutely necessary . Laws have to be made reguarding this aspect. VIP culture is really dangerous for our country. Just because you clear an exam no matter how difficult it is you can't trouble others each and every person has their own dignity and they deserve respect .

The interviewer interrupts very rudely in what is otherwise an insightful and interesting discourse on the civil services.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam... Most respected admirable talented person & President of india said that in his autobiography (wings of fire) "He did a sign on a bill which was slightly unconstitutional under the pressure of Cabinet Ministers.... & they represented the bill in way that Mr Kalam had no option" Hence, It's not that people who do under pressure work is quite easy to do or to not do.... Nd it's most of the ministers are corrupt nd we the people are responsible for making these kind of ministers ( MPs/MLAs)

Jeez, can you let him finish his entire sentence before cutting him off like one billion times?

Prepare your questions in advance or atleast gauge the mannerisms of respecting the person you're interviewing.

It is not only the case that IAS are generalists. Even when you read operational books like "The Goal", after a stint in managing a plant at ground level, the person is moved to a variety of roles like sales, r&d, strategy and so on in which they have low practical knowledge so that they can be prepared for execution roles.
