Tank mates:

Otoclincus will also not eat shrimp.

Other fish: it's all about the mouth size, and the environment. You're absolutely correct that basically any fish will eat shrimp, and the assumption should be they'll eat anything they can fit in their mouth.

So, if you're looking to breed as many shrimp as possible, outside of fish like otos and bristlenose, better not to have them.

But if you just want a healthy ecosystem and you want more shrimp, nano fish are absolutely fine. Shrimplets are extremely good at hiding and grow fast. If you've got little rasboras, ember Tetras, and pygmy Corydoras, they're only able to eat EXTREMRLY small shrimplets (<2mm generally). If you've got places for them to hide (particularly moss!) and feed your fish well, losses are very minimal.

I've got 30 fish in my 29g, and went from 24 Neos to 500+ in 3-4 months.

I only say this because I've encountered a lot of people who worry a lot about fish eating their shrimp, and it's important to understand that while it can (and will) happen particularly with baby shrimp, as long as you've got a good environment for them (lots of food, lots of hiding places) losses are very rare.

A caveat I'll add though is guppies. Maybe it's just my experience and not common, but I've found guppies are *voracious* eaters, so I'd be more reluctant to use them vs the nano Tetras, rasboras, and Danios.

I love you talking to us like we're friends. I fell victim to over feeding myself, really appreciate all the great info you share.

I’ve kept fish for 40 years and just set up my first shrimp tank. They arrive in 2-3 days. I’m a nervous wreck! I’m confident that I’ve done everything right, but this is the FIRST video I watched that told HOW to drip acclimate! I mean how fast/slow to drip 💧. I’m so excited and anxious, but I feel better since I learned this tidbit. 😊Thanks so much!!

The sitting on your hands reference was pretty hilarious 😅
I'm going through that process with my first attempt at a Reef Tank at the moment.
Waiting for the cycle!

Hi Mark! I just wanted to say I’ve followed you for many years. I think I’ve been keeping shrimp for 7 or 8 years now! But I love your channel and I always come back to old videos and love the new stuff you’re coming out with. Just wanted to say I would love to see some Mark’s Shrimp tank merch. Especially an “Un Momento” Mark’s Shrimp Tank shirt! I’d definitely buy one! 🧡

Another great video Mark! I think I've made all of these mistakes at some point, and I'm especially guilty of too big changes in water quality.. Interestingly, just saw a couple of Damselfly larvae in my shrimp breeding tub, so will be enlisting the help of my WCMMs to sort that out...

Thank you for the tip of measuring tdh between the tank and the water the shrimp came in from the store/supplier. I'll use your method from now on instead of only going by the time acclimating

I learned so much from your video but I have a question. Will ick medication kill shrimp ?

I'm settling a 20 long. Planning on plenty of easy care plants. I've seen where it is good to leave plant sheds in. Driftwood I've got too much but will use the best 3 or 4 pieces. Mostly plant based substrates but will supplement with sand or fine gravel. Waiting 4 to 6 weeks to add shrimp. I must decide on the starting fish, though.

Very nice! One question tho, when you talk about sherry shrimp are talking about every neo caridina or just this exact strain?

I was going to say that I've seen multiple people online say that they consider Otocinclus to be the only shrimp-safe fish. Bristlenose were excluded at the time because they were saying that even though they don't attack and eat the shrimp they could do damage just accidentally if they're close to full size. Plus one person swore up and down they saw a Bristlenose eat a baby shrimp once, but I feel like that is crazy rare (if true) because so many people keep them in their shrimp tanks.

You mentioned Bristlenose plecos being sort of safe. What is your opinion about Otocinclus?
