Winter storm shuts down Kansas City, Missouri

It's not the snow that's the issue, it's the ice underneath it that accumulated right before. Salt/sand trucks couldn't get around. 120+ accidents in just a few hours before freezing rain turned to sleet then snow.

This was the standard for KC in the 40s through the 90s. A six-to-ten-inch snow in January was not unusual if we get three or more of these before mid April that will not be unusual. Snow tires and chains were the norm back then. Icy streets were treacherous back then, just like today it's just that we expected them. No one made a news story about them.
