I pulled up the Tigers bullpen stats since August 11 when they really took off. They have 210 IP (out of 347 pitched) which is 33.1 more than the 2nd most, the ERA is 2.31, and the WHIP is 0.96. Their bullpen has basically been Tarik Skubal without as many k’s. Add in Skubal’s pitching, and the team has had literal Cy Young pitching for 73% of their IP in those 39 games. Their win % in those games is a near identical 71%. Coincidence?

The answer is simple. Benching Javy Baez. The team actually wins when he doesn’t play.

Tigers are getting in. They’re hot at the right time and the Twins and Royals are in a free fall. In a 3 game series with Skubal going they could beat anyone. If I were an Orioles or Astros fan I’d be hoping to play anyone but the Tigers in the Wild Card.

The Tigers record with Parker Meadows in the lineup is something like 51-26. His defense is great and he has started to hit a bit better. With him in the lineup I'm thinking the Tigers make the playoffs and win the first round, but probably lose in the second. Look out 2025! Go Tigers!

I don't really care so much what we do in the playoffs, I'm just happy that we're finally playing good baseball again and I don't have to be ashamed of the olde English D.

Folks were asking me in early August why did I bother watching/listening to the games. Now they ask me how the Boys are doing for the past few weeks. To me, start of the year, I would have been happy with a .500 or better season, and honestly, I would be happy with the results even if we don't make the playoffs because we can build on this. If we go to the playoffs, it's a bonus, , I'll welcome it.

Overall, it does fall on in-game management by A.J. Hinch. From the adjustment with starting pitching due to injuries to having quite a few left handed batters in the lineup and on the bench, he's got personnel for favorable pitching/hitting match ups. Having Kerry Carpenter and Riley Greene back in the lineup healthy by August was like a trade for the team. Baez injury and platooning McKinstry and Verling with Trey Sweeney at Shortstop undoubtedly proved who was a liability in the everyday lineup.

Looking at overall team stats for the entire season waters down who Detroit is today. The Tigers have added players, mostly rookies throughout the year that has completely changed their team.

Also, the openers and the rookie arms they've used after said openers as long reliever slash starters was a genius move & completely changed their season.

This feels like 84 in reverse where the champs started off hot whereas this team getting hot at the right time

Excellent analytic breakdown, thanks. Biggest reason Tigers are winning is they are playing their hearts out. Doing the extra things like taking extra base, tracking down balls in outfield, etc. Plus Tarik is elite. AND Twinkies have collapsed so they were able to catch them.

A good bullpen is essential to get into the post season.

When you mentioned the Tigers' starting pitchers being 15th in WAR after the trade deadline, u left out that our rotation has also pitched far less innings than anyone about us due to the amount of openers we used. If you were going off WAR per 9 innings, we would probably rank out similar to what we did before the deadline.

Good luck Detroit! You guys have a great GM! Once Javy Baez is gone you will see him work his magic even more. Y’all got a bright future 🎉

Carson Kelly was traded to the Rangers. Rogers' back up is Dillon Dingler.

No Baez, dude is a black hole not only on offense and was an easy out and momentum killer, his defense was also much worse then most would think. Sweeney has been the model of consistency since he’s been here, nice considering he was a add-on for the Flaherty trade

Gritty Tigs Baby !!!

I knew when Tori Hunter flew over that wall unsuccessfully getting Big Papis slam, that Detroit wouldn’t be in the playoffs for 10 years. It’s been a long, hard ride. But to me, I’ll take this team over any of the others we’ve had in the past.
