This is proof of what good storytelling can do. I knew all about this story had heard about it many times. Didn’t realize it until halfway in. Also, if I’m being honest, it was better than any news coverage done on it. Keep them coming dude!

This is surely one of the best assassination masterplans of this generation. I'm both impressed and horrified.

the fact that you didn't reveal what this was until after the fact to put us in the shoes of siti makes this story so much more entertaining and terrifying. masterful storytelling as always!

The most horrible case of “It’s just a prank, bro.”

I'm from Malaysia! And thanks for covering this story! This was a huge thing back in the day, and because of this, both North Korea and Malaysia two-way ties had deteriorated and resulted in the closure of diplomatic embassy offices in both countries respectively. Today, the building that housed the North Korean embassy in Malaysia, is currently occupied by a kindergarten.

I've heard this story several times, such a terrible situation all around. Those girls were duped into an actual hit and could have also suffered a deadly reaction too. It's sad because he was actually a decent family man doing what he could to not be associated with the destruction of his family name. He used a different name on his passport and traveled commercial so his true identity wasn't even known until after he died.

That's something out of a movie. I was expecting the 'prank show' to be a farce for trafficking, but it very quickly turned into a thriller film. Great storytelling, Mr. Ballen! The suspense was amazing.

I remember hearing about this in the news! As soon as you said the ‘third actor’ had ignored them and walked over to start the prank I knew something was off, and then I remembered this story. I’m glad you told it from Siti’s POV instead of ‘James’. Also, you’re right. It’s shocking this hasn’t been made into a movie or at least a documentary

I knew this story, but it was really masterful to tell it from the point of view of one of the girls. It's really clear how they both were recruited unknowingly for this.

I was waiting this whole video to find out how this was all linked to an "evil little brother" and boy was I shocked when it was revealed.

This story is crazy.

I remember when this story was first released to the public. A very sad use of poor and vulnerable young women. The horrific evil behind the act just infuriates me. The true criminal won’t ever face the justice that most of us ground ourselves on. This is probably the best description of this epic that I have heard. Thanks, John, for a fabulous retelling of this international “prank”.

Oh god, I remember when this happened. I felt so bad for the unsuspecting women. Knowing her background makes this even more tragic.

I'm 37 and you make me feel like a little kid listening to his dad/mom tell him bedtime stories. I know you have your family and life but wish you could do this every day of the week lol; love your channel!!

I actually read an article about this a while ago, but it's great to see it presented in such a masterful way on this channel, in this form! On a related note to the story itself, I had a Korean roommate in college (this is in the US) who went to kindergarten with Kim Jong Un (yes, seriously) in Switzerland. She obviously had no idea who he was, but she clearly remembers one time when he tried to play with her on the playground, and she rejected his attempts to play. Since they were both Korean, her parents spoke with Kim Jong Un during some kind of parent visitation day (no, his parents were not there!), and found it odd that he was speaking in the form of Korean that an elder would use to address people younger. Later on, when they were no longer living in Switzerland, her dad happened to come across a newspaper article about Kim Jong-Il and his family. In the article, it spoke about how Kim Jong-Il's son was going to school in Switzerland, and there was a picture of him, and voila, the parents realized why the little boy they had met in their daughter's kindergarten spoke Korean in a strange way and didn't have any parents with him on parent visitation day. Just had to share that because it's such a crazy thing to happen..

I knew this story sounded familiar. You brought it to life so very well with your masterful storytelling. Absolutely well done!

I'm from Kuala Lumpur and was shocked when I heard about this assassination but didn't know the details of their backstory and enjoyed hearing it from you. Thank you Mr Ballen!

I knew kju’s brother was assassinated but I never knew the story behind it. This might’ve been the craziest story you’ve ever told

When the 2 women were arrested they spent a long time in prison. The charges weren't 'quickly dropped'. The court found them both guilty & dismissed their explanations of what happened.
