As part of its nesting behavior, the elf owl has been observed capturing thread snakes to rid its nest of parasites, releasing them within its habitat. In their natural habitat, elf owls typically have a lifespan ranging from 3 to 6 years, whereas in captivity, such as in a zoo environment, they tend to enjoy a longer life span, typically living between 6 to 10 years.
