Dr. Drew Says Homelessness Is Usually A Medical, Not Lifestyle, Problem | Clips | Dad Saves America

One of the most painful aspects of homelessness is that a parent with an adult child living on the streets often has no ability to get their child the help they need. Even when a family has more than sufficient financial resources to access the necessary mental illness or addiction treatment, the child may irrationally refuse help. Changes in state laws over the past few decades have made it nearly impossible for courts to acknowledge that some people are not capable of making decisions for themselves and require family intervention to get them back on their feet.

Dr. Drew Pinsky is a practicing doctor of internal medicine as well as an addiction specialist and has become known for hosting KROQ’s “Loveline” for over 30 years, starring in VH1’s ”Celebrity Rehab,” and hosting a number of daytime shows. Dr. Drew recently wrote a teen guide on consent that deals with identity and relationships that he co-authored with his daughter Paulina Pinsky called ”It Doesn’t Have To Be Awkward.”

Dr. Drew’s currently hosts “Dr. Drew After Dark,” produced by Tom Segura and Christina Pazsitzky’s YMH Studios, hosts “Ask Dr. Drew," and co-hosts “The Adam and Drew Show” with Adam Carolla.

The city where I live has become a homeless magnet. Liberals. We provide housing, food, medical, everything. I worked my whole life and so can they. We used to have mental hospitals and they were shut down. Now the mental patients are on the streets. Need mental hospitals.

I was homeless for 5 years and saw a lot of mental illness on the street and in the shelters. It's a lifestyle because the shelters are dangerous places. I suffered from depression and treated it with alcohol because all their pills really didn't work. I started an excellent cannabis extract 5 years ago which cured my depression and alcoholism! Today I am a homeowner! If you're on the street, never give up!!

Here’s a question. Do they have mental issues because of their drug abuse or do they self medicate with street drugs because they have mental illnesses?

At some point we have to differentiate between hard working people who cannot afford the outrageous greed rampant in our society and people who choose to live that way.

I am older and I did see poor people, never saw homeless people until these last few years. Makes me very sad. We did take take of the sick not put them on the street. Thank you Dr. Drew, let's help these people and stop drugging them.

When people aka parents ignore mental issues early on and don't step in of course the internal echo chamber kicks in

At least in PA a person can't be forced into treatment if drugs are involved. Also until recently a person under 18 could not not get into drug rehab because no one would detox them. I have been told this has changed, I hope so. People with mental illness, especially not yet diagnosed I expect self medicate using street drugs in an attempt to feel normal. Also people who've been incarcerated, especially for more than a few years often have ptsd as a result. And they often turn to drugs in an attempt to deal with their new life that has changed so much and in an attempt to control their behavior and emotions. There's many reasons someone becomes homeless, as many reasons as there are people.

I have a few acquaintances who chose to be homeless. There's definitely mental illness involved, but drugs don't seem to have a role. One fellow is completely sober, another drinks infrequently. Each has other choices that they don't want to take.
One could live with his mother and older brother, but they have rules he doesn't want to follow. The other can't get along with his mother. Apparently, she's verbally abusive.
So they camp in the woods.

I live in New York City and I believe we just had the law changed where you can help a homeless person in need even if they are asking not to be helped. It used to be a law until recently and I would see so many people that needed help I would call the ambulance call social services we would try to let them know that they would be safe that would be OK but they need to go be seen and they would say no and we couldn't help them against their will.

As a person who has been homeless for almost 40 years and still very close to being homeless now I can definitely tell you homelessness is very complex it depends on the person who's there.. It is NOT just a one thing or this or that
AND I'm living in a state that sees homelessness like Dr Drew.. Seeing things from this point and perspective is so way off It is more harm then actually helping..

And how does the average person afford treatment that encompasses all those aspects?

I didn’t realize that a lack of affordable housing is a medical condition OR a lifestyle choice.
