This is such an amazing alternative to star rating! I love how you really thought about the books holistically and described exactly why you classified them as you did 🙂

I personally LOVED The House in the Cerulean Sea. And though I can understand the reluctance to recommend a book that has some controversy as a content creator, I find it annoying when people chose to "cancel" a book that is actually so nice and wholesome (seriously, that book is a hug). I'm Canadian and I do realize that it's absolutely horrible, what has been uncovered recently, but I don't see a strong link between that and this book. It's NOT a retelling about what happened. From what I understand, the author expressed himself badly in an interview and now there's bad PR
Thank you for the video, it was fun watching you rank your reads :)

As someone who has read magic treehouse and still do I have to say it is an amazing book series that you can get through pretty fast and I'm so happy you put it on the top tier

I'm mainly a romance reader but I get so many great books from your channel and a lot of the books I really liked were books I got from your videos. Early departures was great and They Went Left was a really good out of the ordinary book as well. I look forward to reading some of these other ones in your best of the best/great category!

I don’t know how Mary Pop Osborne did it but the Magic Tree House series still holds up to this day

I'm French and La Cabane magique was one of my favorite series as a kid!! I was so obsessed I became caught up with the series and my father literally wrote me an entire book with the characters and a unique historical plot as one of an 'extra' to the series, one of my best childhood memories

Great video! This is dedication to go through every single book from this year 💜

I completely agree about love and olives. I appreciate all the author was trying to accomplish in the novel, but you can tell it’s the longest in the trilogy when reading it (or maybe that’s just me)

I literally bought Heartstopper by Alice Oseman today and I know I can’t wait to read it! Also I actually loved Love and Olives because I liked the underlining theme of mental illness. The main character suffers from panic attacks and her father has bipolar disorder.

This looks exhausting, just to like tier rank all the books you read in the year. I say as I do the exact same thing in my reading journal using your tiers. Anyways, there aren't many common reads between you and me. I would have too though put Lives of Saints in Great (but I read it last year) because as someone who likes short story collections it was just up my alleyway and I adored it. I however though would also put Tales of the Hinterland in great as well. I wasn't reading it for the Hazel Wood, I barely liked that book but what I did like was the world and the gothic fairy tale aspect, so this is far more what I'm into compared to The Hazel and the Night Country. And as I said, I am into anthologies. I also would have put Lost in the Never Woods into great as well. I understand why you didn't like it (as in I watch the DNFs video, disagree but if you didn't like it you didn't like it), it wasn't even what I was looking for or in the mood for. I was thinking Over the Garden Wall, a whimsical and strange woodland tale. But even then, it being what it was, it was undeniable, to me at least, that it was a good book, and I was also impressed by the character work because they felt very real to me. So even though I wasn't entirely into it, I still gave it four stars because I generally think it is well crafted and I will reread it one day when I am more in the mood for this kind of story.

Thank you for mentioning the issues w Cerulean Sea, I've seen so many people put it on favorites lists without mentioning anything about Klune's appropriation of Indigenous trauma and I have several friends that have been really hurt by the way the book community has largely ignored Indigenous criticisms of that book.

For anyone that is curious, the specific event that Klune used as inspiration (and than as marketing in couple of interviews) was the Sixties Scoop. We had similar shit in the US too which is why we have ICWA here. (Adding to note: at least in the US kids have been removed for reasons as ridiculous as mom being a single mom or having a relative that was arrested for being a land protector.)

I definitely did not feel that Crescent City was her BEST book, clearly that goes to ACOTAR. However, I don't feel it should be middle of the road. It is actually a good urban fantasy with an strong world. I think the problem was that she OVERLOADS everyone with way to much information in the first 100 pages of the books. So, by the time you get to the interesting parts of the story, you are overwhelmed. Hopefully book two will have have most twists, romance, and drama. XO Thanks for making this list, Happy Holidays.
