Politics (FULL Audio Book)
by Aristotle (384 BCE-322 BCE)
Translated by Benjamin Jowett (1817-1893)

The Politics, by the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, is one of the most influential texts in political philosophy. In it, Aristotle explores the role that the political community should play in developing the virtue of its citizens. One of his central ideas is that "Man is a political animal," meaning that people can only become virtuous by active participation in the political community. Aristotle also criticizes his teacher Plato, classifies and evaluates six different types of constitutions and political institutions, and describes his vision of the ideal state. Aristotle's views on women and slavery are unenlightened by today's standards, but his work remains enduring and relevant to this day.

For those who write Aristotle off for supporting slavery, the modern version of that is employment. Just substitute “master” for boss and “slave” for employee and it holds up to modern times.

while I have certainly not listened to all 8 books, and furthermore while I'm anxious to learn Aristotle's Views, I have noted with some uncertainty that Aristotle states in the very beginning of this book that the state or political community aims at good in a greater degree then any other and furthermore the state or political community aims for the highest good. now perhaps I am being too cynical, but I believe history has proven this statement to be erroneous as over the course of history it is the state which has been responsible for more misery, death, destruction, War, poverty, and overall human suffering then any one person or group. Yes there have been individuals such as Hitler who are thought of as an individual who caused such misery and death but the truth is people such as Hitler were leaders of the state or political community. I think the average person that must on a daily basis navigate the governmental system under which or within which he or she lives would vigorously disagree with Aristotle's belief that the state or political community aims at good in a greater degree then others.
