Oh, for anyone who might be younger and not understand all the shade thrown in this song because it was written the 60's, here's a list. (this song was before my time, as well, but is one of my father's favorites)

Bobby Taylor - the scandal is that he's married but still trying to score a date with the hot widow Johnson.

Mrs. Taylor - When her husband is away on business she orders delivery after delivery of ice, either having an affair with the delivery driver or having wild parties with lots of alcohol and men.

Mr. Baker - Back in the day when a single woman got pregnant she'd "go away" for a while, supposedly to visit relatives but actually to hide her pregnancy, give birth, and put the kid up for adoption so as to preserve her reputation. Mr. Baker got his secretary pregnant and she had to leave to hide her shame while Mr. Baker apparently did nothing to help her.

Widow Jones - Is an exhibitionist putting on "accidental" peep shows as she gets undressed every night for kicks.

Mr. Harper - the man the school is named after and supposedly the most upstanding citizen of the PTA missed the meeting because he's a drunk and is hungover.

Shirley Thompson - Another PTA member alcoholic. Shirley is apparently even drinking on the job in the middle of the afternoon at a Jr. High School.

Peyton Place - A well known soap opera in the 60's based off a novel about a community that was supposedly well to do and proper on the surface but was actually full of cheaters, liars, backstabbers, and every scandal imaginable.
