As a westbrook fan i can admit that my body tenses up when its a close game and he has the ball when the shot clock is running out

2:42 “Russel Westbrook’s on track with another triple double. Did he just air all a free throw?” Yup that’s Russ

And yet 2k got him draining threes in my face, getting a blowby animation from a size up, dunking on everyone on the team, inflated stats like you've never seen.

Westbrook pondering at his airball free throw is easily the top 5 funniest moment in nba history.

1:10 Pretty sure PG was not hurt there by the contact. He just so disappointed at what Westbrook did his legs went weak. 🤣

I'ma gonna break it down for you all. Used to play reasonable high-level, coached high-level juniors and learnt way more about shooting coaching then I did as a player and I'm not a bad shooter ;)

The major issue wrong with Russ's (I call him Westbrick - nah but I love the rest of his game and his attitude) shooting is his technique and motion. No matter the ball placement (as mentioned in the other issue below), foot work etc he extends his jump before he shoots the ball - it should all be ideally in one motion after leaving the ground. You watch him, he gets up early with great foot work and then tries to shoot at his peak (elbow to snap follow through verry veryy Russshed :) ). This rushes the most important aspect of accurate shooting. Now can you shoot like this? Absolutely its part of advanced shooting techniques but you need to have a great base mastered standard shooting technique before you can try that at the highest levels whcih is what Russ needs to concentrate on first imho. This is the reason there's a lot of air balls and over corrections that look horribly ugly.

The other issue I found was in his hand placement on the ball. He places it in the shooting stance at a horizontal in-line with his chicken wing first, rather than at a vertical alignment after bouncing the ball which should be the angle you shoot at at the start and ending of the follow-through but he shortcuts the line of the ball in the middle of the full motion which is at odds with what I would call correct shooting technique (I hope this makes sense). As an example imagine lining up a tee shot in golf but instead of the normal stance, Russ needs to lie on the ground and swing = he's already in a vicarious position and the adjustments on elbow to snap and follow-through is like rolling the dice. His elbow to snap remains at an angle chicken wing position and never aligns with the target (ring). It should be under his or in-front of his chin before completing elbow to Snap.

1st Shot (free throw) = not in one motion / feet motion out of sync / his arms started before his legs/ his legs reached full tippy toe extension / then his elbow to shot / the motion that shot the ball was the last one which did not use any of the motion or energy generated by the feet in the first place - hence the air ball.
2nd Shot (foul line extended) = same as last but mainly foot work generated energy lost before shot so at that point he's all flailing arms = hence air ball.
3rd Shot (3-point shot 2m outside three) = this one maintains similar aspects of previous shots, he actually gets this motion spot on but fails to shoot the ball at the end of the snap, watch it, its delayed, from this distance? Russ! = 'Sub please ref'.
4th Shot (3-point shot) = he actually gets this motion as close to spot as I have seen him but fails to shoot the ball at the end of the snap, watch it, its delayed = at this point we're not shooting but throwing it up there.
5th Shot (6 foot infront of basket) = his arm work on the pass/shot fake into shot is quite excellent here but his feet are pointing ball side away from the ring and the shot is not great as his body is maligned mid-air = forgivable.
6th Shot (3-point shot 1m outside) = he actually gets this motion as close to spot as I have seen him but rushes it which is the problem - listen to Shaq Russ 'slow down' don't Russh = ok shot but not for his action, just throwing it up there and hoping.
7th Shot (45 degree from the foul line) = the action to get into shooting position here is as elite as you can get = well done Russ. Again the reason he missed was because of the lost motion by letting the ball go after hanging in the air = a very hard skill to consistently shoot high % which he should not be shooting until the basics are perfected.
8th Shot (3 foot in-front of basket) = this one exposes a major flaw in Russ's game and most players = no left hand! Watch as he tries to rotate his body into a shooting position when his feet and body/torso are not even set in the right position to shoot a right handed shot. Was it a foul? yeah probably was but he still had a shot to recover from but unfortunately no left hand. He needs to learn from CP3, Steph or even Giddey and develop his left hand baby hook or floater coz he can certainly dribble with it.
9th Shot (3-point shot) = a good action once again but loses the energy of the motion by hanging before release and slightly rushed - which I say again you can do but only if you have a fantastic base shooting technique to begin with.
10th Shot (45 degree from the foul line extended) = I can't believe it hanging again! If only he watched Steph Curry, there's no hang its pure elbow to snap rainbowwy goodness. I reckon Russ could be a good shooter if he just let it fly once extension is reached.
11th Shot (Baseline I think inside 3) = This was a good shot but rushed once again so for him and his technique not a good look.
12th Shot (45 degree from 3) = U-G-A-LEE - rushed again - watch his foot work had not finished and torso and arm work were already shooting = completely out of sync in shot motion. Not sure about the studdered arms - was he trying for a foul or a kick-out foul?
13th Shot (free throw) = see Shot1. He may as well not use his feet (which I don't advise anyone) coz he loses the energy they produce.
14th Shot (3-point shot) = feet action into jump/delay/then shoots = air ball. Actually I notice an additional arm action in the snap which is also delayed.
15th Shot (45 degree from the foul line extended) = I can't believe it hanging again! He would have made it if he just let it go in motion.
16th Shot (45 degree from the foul line extended) = This is actually a really good look for a shooter but not for Russ. Look at the feet positioning and flailing in the motion = that affects everything.
17th Shot (45 degree from the 3) = If you have read this far and understood the major issues I've highlighted above then you know there is no point giving feedback on this one = Anus Horribilus!
18th Shot (Baseline 3) = This is actually a really good look for a shooter but not for Russ - IT LOOKED RUSHED and its so important to have the ring in sight early, I think he looked at the player then the ring in motion and gave it a good guestimation, close but not close enough for NBA level.

Man I would love to coach this guy. He has every attribute in the book but this one. My advice would not be 'Keep shooting' as his technique and motion needs some major cleaning up.
He knows what a good shot looks like and therefore maybe what he looks like but he doesn't know how to do it himself. I really can't believe with the coaches over there how he has flown under the radar in regards to this. Worst shooter alive??? Hmm I think that's a bit harsh lets agree that he needs some work.

Russ if ya listening, call me bro! Cheers ;)

He did the same thing during the thunder heat finals in 2012 I think it was. He hogged the ball and took terrible shots. Never been a Westbrook fan for that reason
