New Water Features at Zaytuna Farm

In this video, Geoff Lawton takes us on an early morning walk through a new series of water features at Zaytuna Farm 👣

The journey begins at a swale that feeds through Paradise Dam to Cubby House Dam around the Zaytuna campsite to Mafia Dam and finally Campus Lagoon, near the property boundary. This water harvesting system has multiple swivel pipes, three level-sill spillways and is the fourth swale in the sequence of swales moving down the property.

This fourth swale soaks into a v-drain on the upslope side of one of the farm’s main tracks. From there, we follow it down the landscape where life potential expands and the complexity of the system grows. The drain leads to a pipe beneath the road before dropping into another swale where cows graze and drop manure, which dilutes and spreads throughout the swale to fertilize a food forest downslope. A swivel pipe here moves the water further downslope into a v-drain behind a house site that flattens to contour, where it becomes another swale with more food forest and more swivel pipes, as well as a level sill spillway. Then, that feeds into …yep… another swale.

This swale is fenced for grazing, planted to trees with lots of crops, and exits via a pipe into a lotus paddy, which spills into a new pond (actually three new ponds) that all have spillways on both sides. The ponds collectively overflow into Wood Duck Dam, a large body of water with lots cultivated around it, swimming features, and a spillway that leads to another swale that leads to Geoff’s new house site and one more dam: Fig Tree Dam.

Key Takeaways

- At the top of a site, water features tend to be concentrated and limited by the landscape. Then, as we move downslope the possibilities and complexity of the system increases. (Geoff calls this a reverse dendritic pattern.)
- Each water feature can flow into another water feature to create a slow, gentle soak throughout the landscape, feeding productive systems all the way down.

As far as I know, you probably deserve a noble peace prize for your amazing work in permaculture.

The smalls ponds are really interesting. I've been thinking of adding a small pond in my small permaculture/food forest. I also have sandy soil, but I am planning on using a liner. I'm a huge fan. I decided on turning my 1/3 acre yard, years ago after watching an online course Geoff posted online. There quite a few videos. I watched them all in a row and did not sleep for the 3 days it took me. I'm strange don't need much sleep, only took breaks to eat. Still continue with the improvements although I am now 75, a little old lady that can still do it! LOL

My heart feels refreshed with these tours! They are an absolute highlight and on top of that, I learn about designing systems!

Thank you Goeff, keep em coming!

After digging numerous swales and planting out my own food forest (by hand), only to have it burn to the ground along with my house in Nov 19, I am now digging and planting all over again, using all that I have learned from both Bill Mollison and yourself. I find so much inspiration seeing how you have developed your piece of paradise ~ often you remind me of things I have forgotten to remember: ideas I have had, plans I've made. I am so grateful for the information that you share, and for your presence on the planet ~ Sending a huge Thank You!

It would be interesting to see how your water is helping neighboring propertys.

How exceptional Geoff, I'm buoyed by your enthusiasm and that beauty. Please make a vid about taking on shareholders, how to make it happen and finding like minded people. You are making dreams come true there. I'm envious, in a good way.

So happy to see you putting in some of the "luxury" features for your own home site ;) Always learn something when you walk and talk your way around Zaytuna :)

Ooh next video show us the bare land before again, a map of the general layout now and some quick progression shots please. Plus I liked how you traced the water's trail, so I'd love to see you pick it up again from Fig Tree dam all the way to the creek.
That's not complaining, it's just to say I loved this video so much that I can't wait for more. Thanks Geoff

The harmony you create with the language of the land gives back infinitely. You have shared the key to everything humanity has been struggling to acknowledge within ourselves. This is what it means to be children of Earth. Thankyou

We have purchased 17.5 acres in the United States. Your walk over you property was very helpful because we are trying to develop our water features, swales, pipes etc. thank you!

Absolutely stunning! Love the shareholder idea so there is a clear path of legacy and care for Zaytuna. You and the team are making such an important impact on people's lives all over the globe showing a glimpse of what is possible. Telling us how to seal a dam in original sandy soil was great. Love the Morton Bay Fig tree. I view them as communication power nodes. If one is feeling disconnected just sitting on their roots trends to sort life out in a powerful gentle way.

Wow, that was incredible. I definitely enjoyed that video. It is amazing what water can do. I am in the process of terracing my property, to hold a lot more water. All I need now is to convince the city to let me take the run off from the street.

Always informational and inspirational. I have 20 acres as part of a watershed in the high desert of Llano California. I hope to see water slowly move across it someday.
