"We simplified this a lot. It’s basically just Men in Spandex at this point, which is way more profound than it sounds."

If I'm ever worried about an AI revolt, I can sleep easy knowing that if Elon's working on it, his incompetence ensures it will never happen in my lifetime

He's building an army of crash-test dummies for the hyperloop.

I like how majority of people believes that Musk is the lead engineer in all of his ingenious projects. In reality he's like Homer Simpson designing new car model with unlimited resources.

It's just body with arms and legs, I swear it's not that hard.

"so basically we've decided to just use humans in spandex suits and you'll just pay them $10 an hour" "it's much more simple, it's really quite profound"

Let's not forget that this announcement was basically a hiring pitch for this new project. This means: (1) they probably haven't really started yet; (2) they haven't been able to recruit any high profile roboticist (which is typically the first step to attract serious talent); and, (3) they must be really desperate or naive. I'm a senior robotics engineer working in this industry (robotics and AI R&D) for about a decade, this proposal, timeline and desperate hiring pitch is laughable. Office talk about this has been all memes and jokes at Elon's expense. Great fun!

Ikea will most likely have fully self-assembling furniture long before Tesla has a fully self-driving car.

I guess that to the people, who weren't into physics, chemistry and natural science, todays technological world looks so confusing and alien that they honestly can't determine what's possible anymore. Maybe that's why so many people fall for this type of thing. They are probably using feelings to determine whether or not proposals actually make sense.

Audience: "How do you respond to this extremely basic and obvious question?"
Elon: "I guess you'll just have to see."

Well I'm sold. That level of confidence can only come from a truly inspired genius that totally isn't lying.

"They think they are smarter than they are"
To hear him that saying about real scientists/experts is just pure irony.

since "semi sentient robot" describes Musks fans quite well, Im a bit worried about whats inside the spandex man...

I love how irritated Musk looked when audience guy questioned the obvious.

Im pretty sure Elon thought to himself "lets see just with how much bullshit i can get away with with my dedicated fans"

How does such a vaporware salesperson get all these defenders?

I remember years ago listening on the radio, must have been 93/94 or so, I heard about this older couple that got into their Winnebago camper, and when they got on the highway they turned on cruise control and jumped in the back of the camper to have a nap. The camper ended up going off into the woods or something after around 90 seconds or so and I believe they ended up only bumped up a bit. Reminds me about how much faith even back then people put into technology.

Elon musk is the only person I ever knew that could announce something without actually showing a working prototype and people still get excited. Anybody can promise something, but actually making that thing come to fruition is another thing entirely. Elon Musk promises a new revolutionary technology and drops it once he realizes it’s not possible. This is shameful.

My prediction for his next scam project is holograms.
There is some interesting research going on where they suspended and move tiny particles in mid air via lasers. So he could take this, hype it up and promise a finished Holodeck in 2 weeks. Start preordering now! :D

I like how they emphasize "you can beat it up" - as if getting into a fistfight is the first safety concern that comes to mind when you let a giant walking lithium battery with robot arms and hands loose in your house.

I'm still convinced the "prototype" was Grimes.
