Personally I like steampunk’s aesthetics more. There’s something about mechanical machines with lots of moving parts that rubs me in a very satisfactory way.

Cyberpunk always seems to have only one string to its bow, and I've found it increasingly less compelling with time; which is a hard-boiled cop/ex-cop teams up with a disenfranchised person or group to take down a powerful megacorporation. The few deviations from this formula also happen to be my favorites in the cyberpunk genre.

Frostpunk last seen sitting in a corner watching this video while freezing to death because the generator is out of coal again...

That sepia moment with the sad music after Jack's unwitting confession brought me joy.

I've always found Steampunk to be so much more interesting than Cyberpunk.
There's just an interesting, raw, but polished charm in Steampunk that you just can't get anywhere else.
Freakin' loved Dishonored.

(In Dishonored's case, it was called "Whalepunk" by the devs instead of Steampunk).

I will defend Wild Wild West to my dying breath. Never understood the hate for it. Smith at his most charming and witty, Branagh going for the full ham and cheese sandwich, Kline doing that double role thing he does so well where one is pretending to be the other. Plus there's a giant steampunk spider!

*Steampunk vs Cyberpunk*

Meanwhile, a dieselpunk grabs chair and eats popcorn.

As much as i love the cyberpunk, i have to agree that, with the exception of the corporate bastards, most people in cyberpunk settings tend to be dressed like complete tossers, with absolutely no sense of style. Meanwhile even goons in steampunk are usually classy af.

Will Smith making Wild Wild West is how we got The Matrix.

No Steampunk means no dieselpunk means no BioShock or Dishonored.

Why is this argument that steampunk is not dystopian? It's still *punk*. It still has that sweet sweet classism.

Jack you missed a beautiful counterpoint when yahtzee brought up watchdogs and how they use technology like magic: “Profiles of the Future: An Inquiry into the Limits of the Possible": “Any sufficiently advanced from magic”

Both Steampunk and Cyberpunk can allow for creative stories, although Steampunk is usually associated with what could've been and sometimes magic elements while Cyberpunk focuses on real world problems like corporate greed, crime, AI, social media and control.

I guess people like Steampunk more because it doesn't remind us of the world that we live in.

Ah yes, this old argument.

Cyberpunk 2077 vs Steampunk 1877

I'll be honest, I prefer solarpunk. Take the historical influence of steampunk and future technology from cyberpunk and you get solarpunk. Never heard of it? Treasure Planet is solarpunk through and through.

You're both wrong. Dieselpunk is where it's at. Meters, green rust protection paint, machine oil. Beautiful!

Steampunk seems more coherent to me, while Cyberpunk has wound up spreading its influence far and wide throughout media to the point that you don't know what is and isn't cyberpunk lately.
