(I'm so sorry this is a really long comment) not only are they poor kids they are kids who don't have wonderful families but they have each other. They are greasers mistreated because they are greasers. They get jumped and hurt and so they end up k!ll!ng someone. Running away as fugitives in a old church which sets on fire and they save a bunch of kids risking their own lives. and then Johnny...when he dies it's horrible a black pit consuming everyone and Dally can't take it because Johnny was the ONLY thing Dally really loved so he figured he has nothing to live for. and the rest of the gang has to live forever without them. and when Johnny said in his note "it was worth saving those kids they have more to live for" he meant he didn't have much to live for his life was worse than theirs and he was right. and that is the real, sad, truth. (am I missing anything?)🥹🥲
