In 1969, a resolution was adopted by the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR on the construction of a complex of factories for the production of heavy-duty vehicles.

The choice fell on Naberezhnye Chelny, a small town on the Kama River at that time. Its advantages were obvious:

— Navigable rivers Kama and Volga,
— Proximity of the railway,
— The presence of the largest construction company in the region, KamGESenergostroy.KAMAZ was declared an All-Union Komsomol shock construction site by a decision of the Central Committee of the Komsomol (Communist Youth Union) on January 24, 1970. Having secured Komsomol vouchers in their city and district Komsomol committees, young people from all over the country, from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok, poured into Naberezhnye Chelny. The average age of KAMAZ builders in those years was 29 years....

This song reminds me of my late grandpa. While he was not Soviet, he was also a truck driver. Back in the late '70s, when the KAMAZ trucks first appeared on the roads of my home country, he had the chance to drive one a few times. According to him, the KAMAZ was head and shoulders above practically anything which has existed here back in the day. IFA, ZiL, Csepel... you name it. Only the Rába 831 came close to it.
