The 'dumming down' of America is real!

There are several factors in why the number of newspapers has declined over many decades. When I got my Journalism degree in the late 1980s, the starting pay for a reporter, straight out of college, was just above minimum wage (at that time, $3.35/Hr.). One paper that wanted to interview me (a weekly in a small town) had a starting pay of $4.25/hr. This paper was the only one in its community, i.e. no competition. Also, at that time, a newspaper was one of the cheapest things you could buy, costing usually around 50 cents, cheaper than what you'd pay for a candy bar. The newspapers I had experience with (either reading or interviewing at) all prioritized advertising over news stories. The editors wouldn't allow a story critical of a business that advertised a lot in the newspaper. Slowly came to realize that most newspapers/ their editorial policies, are all about maintaining the status quo. This is true for what passes for radio and television news these days, especially on the cable networks. Internet "news" is pathetically biased and distorted.

That is why I pay for a subscription to one of the two newspapers in my area. The other is the Deseret News, run by Mormons and their stories seem to always have a Mormon bent to them.

Local News services, like the humble Local News Papers, formally the mainstay of News in rural and remote Australia, has gone almost completely, to be replaced by a one size fits all kind of Local News Paper that are making front page stories out of issues affecting communities up to 7hrs drive away, with no stories at all from the very communities these Papers service. The problem is simply concentration of Media ownership, with the Local Paper, Radio Station, and the local T.V stations all being allowed to be owned by the same Corporate Entity, and the biggest single owner of Media in Australia? I'm glad you asked, he's "this Nations least favourite export, " Mr Rupert Murdoch!! Ironic, don't you think?

We just paid a 6-month renewal to our daily newspaper! AustinTx is lucky to have many good local papers, including College papers. I can't afford subscriptions to them all. But I share (w credits!) often and when I buy, I mention advertisements in local press. ❤❤❤
