I always loathed Rachel as a main character, but it got worse when I learned about Lea Michele bullying cast members behind the scenes. Plus, by the way they'd go on about Rachel, you'd swear that Lea was the ONLY person who had any genuine talent.

To be fair every character on Glee was kind of intolerable. They all had moments where they did shitty things. The only ones consistently good were maybe Kurt's dad or Coach Beist.

I keep wanting to root for Rory because she’s realistically flawed… she follows patterns that were laid before her, and it’s kind of critical to the story that Rory’s arc ultimately ends in her getting pregnant at the worst possible time in her life. Her bad decisions and souring character were necessary for the story, I feel.

Rory falling apart after going to college, while not fun to watch, is a pretty relatable experience for most people who can’t find their way after high school.

What’s less defensible is that Rory made negative progress in A Year in the Life. She’s still pursuing a directionless affair with Logan and considering herself above jobs that other people would be happy to have…in her 30s!

- Dumped Natalie on her birthday (twice)

What makes me hate Rachel more is the fact that she’s so terrible to other people, and then acts like the victim when people are terrible to her in turn

Honestly, I’m genuinely surprised that Zoey from Zoey 101 didn’t make this list.

Carly and Tori both seemed designed to be the "Normal" main character, and reacting to the chaos surrounding them. But that arguably made them the least interesting part of their respective shows.

Tori isn’t a bad character imo. She’s just the most boring/normal which is the point of the show.

Don't forget Susan Meyer from Desperate Housewives. She was known as "the sweet one" and "the adorable one" (in fact she often referred to herself that way). But in reality, she was selfish, narcissistic, childish, and a terrible drama queen who often hurt the people who loved her just to feed her need for drama and chaos. Worst of all, she was a really bad mom.

I also hated Fez from That 70 Show. And that relationship with Jackie at the end? Unnatural and creepy.

Personally, I always thought Rachel was meant to be a villain protagonist, like a less sympathetic or fun Sue.

I'm baffled by Carrie Bradshaw being regarded by many as a heroine. Like you say, she's awful all-round.

There is a difference between a bad main character and a flawed nuanced main character. In How I Met Your Mother Ted is framed as the main love interest and his flaws and obsessions are excused. But in Gilmore Girls, Rory goes through stages of entitlement and growth (like most people do at some point) but her bad behavior isn’t excused and made to look noble.
Being a main character doesn’t mean you have to be flawless, it means you should be relatable and realistically criticized

I think Rachel was supposed to be obnoxious, which she totally nailed. On the other hand, Leah Michelle being just as mean, self-centered and obnoxious as Rachel was in real life was pretty girl.

I’m going to have to disagree with you on Tori… the whole point of victorious is taking a girl who’s a fish out of water and seeing her journey into a new school full of insanely talent people and she’s learning as she goes
