Two things. One you can use boiling water as well. Two some thermometers can be adjusted to display the correct temperature. You don't necessarily have to get a new one. I would check what ever paperwork came with the thermometer to see if you can adjust the calibration. I know that the analog ones could be adjusted by turning the nut at the bottom and some of them even had a hole on the cover's clip that was shaped exactly like that nut so you wouldn't have to find a wrench or something to adjust it.

Calibration of any measuring device is absolutely necessary to ensure the data collected is accurate. Typically calibrations are done in routine preventive maintenance procedures. Well done ma’am.

My thermometer has an adjuster so I can calibrate

I use mine all the time. Its hard to tell the doneness of artisan breads. I just insert and check for 195°F, its done.

I just read the room temp. If it matches my fan that gives room temp, within couple of degrees, I call it good.

I've always used boiling water. I never have ice, as my fridge freezer is stuffed to the nth°. 😕
