Such a beautiful little baby. It's a male; you can tell by its broad antennae. Females have long narrow ones.

Many moths and other insects have no mouths and do not eat in the ADULT stage. They do have mouths and are total eating machines as caterpillars, tho. They spend all their time eating to save up enough fat to get them through the adult stage, which consists of mating, laying eggs and then dying and usually only lasts a few days if that (some insects live only for a few HOURS as adults). Also, the adults usually die of exhaustion after mating, not starvation.

Its so wrong that such a beautiful creature has such a short life

Fun fact moths tend to rest with their wings spread out like this where as butterflies tend to rest wing up

I have one, a male, that's just hanging out outside of my apartment's door on the balcony. It's pretty cool. I'm sad that it has to die soon but so is life.

I broth one into my house just few minutes ago. It is male and at the end of it's lifespan, poor thing was in rainstorm for last few days. Now it will stay on Birch branches in our house till it's death, it is to precious to be left outside to suffer in rain and high wind for next day or so. We get them in our yard from June to August, here in Sudbury Ontario Canada.

I just wanna say Thank you so much for sharing this video!!! I’m practicing drawing the Luna moth and the way you demonstrated the moth like that, turning it this way and that, showing him at different angles... was simply invaluable!!!
Apart from the fact I live on the west coast and prob never encounter one in the wild like that. Will definitely be saving this video thanks!

My favorite American moth, though the Hyalophoras (cecropias and related moths) and Polyphemus are pretty spectacular too. Yours is a male, the wide featherlike antennae are the giveaway Females have thin antennae, and are nnot as commonly seen because they don't fly much -- they just sit and produce pheromones that attract the males - it's the males flying in search of females that get confused by porch lights and end up on our houses (or decks). :) They normally hold their wings this way - it's their natural resting position.
