There are lots of myths on measures to adopt in the prevention and cure of corona virus fuelled by social media: from using garlic as a cure to bathing in alcohol.
Gist Nigeria takes a look at some of these myths and the facts.
MYTH 1
Spraying alcohol or chlorine all over your body will kill the new corona virus
(FACT)
No, they won’t kill viruses that have already entered your body. Spraying such substances can be harmful to clothes.
MYTH 2
Can eating garlic help prevent the new corona virus?
(FACT)
The answer is NO. Garlic is a healthy food but there is no evidence to show that eating it keeps the virus away.
MYTH 3
The new corona virus affects only older people; younger people are not susceptible
(FACT)
People of all ages can be infected but older persons and people with pre-existing medical conditions appear to be more vulnerable.
MYTH 4
Antibiotics are effective in preventing and treating the new corona virus.
(FACT)
Antibiotics do not work against viruses but only on bacteria. The 2019 – nCOV is a virus and antibiotics should not be used.
MYTH 5
Hand dryers are effective in killing corona virus.
(FACT)
Wash your hands regularly with soap or alcohol-based sanitizier. Once your hands are cleaned, you should dry them thoroughly by using paper towels or hair dryers.
MYTH 6
Pets at home can spread the new corona virus.
(FACT)
At present, there is no evidence that companion animals or pets such as dogs or cats can be infected with the new corona virus. It is always a good idea to wash your hands with soap and water after contact with pets.
