For the man at the elevator, he was a ghost. When he was alive he lived in that apartment possibly decades ago when the interior was different. He some how died rather suddenly while he was away from home, and didn't know that he died and he came to the apartment and when the girl spoke to him to the man finally noticed the surroundings and saw that the place he knew had changed (i.e different colored walls, tiled floors that were once hardwood, new decorations). The man still not knowing he was a ghost fled believing he was either in a parallel universe or had entered a time warp that took him to the future.
