Looks like an old flush cut to me. I’m on the west coast. Never been to Florida. Your trees are very different from ours in California.

It REALLY seems that the "Laurel oak" although more "hardy" it is a tree that is NOT very "Long Lived". SO, it is best to plant the "Live oak" or Quercus Virginiana, IF you are in zones 7-9 in the Southern USA.
I am lucky enough to be able to grow a MUCH hardier form of LIVE OAK. Quercus Fusiformis, it DOES grow much SLOWER than the Quercus Virginiana does though.
I have 2 "forms" of the Quercus Fusiformis, that are now growing for me, in my yard. And, right NOW, I must say that people in the SOUTH should pay attention to make sure that they are listening to the words that will make them seem to be REALLY in the KNOW about the subject matter about the TREES that they are having to stop and deal with the meaning of it all.
