This 3D animation shows you the steps of an angioplasty. This video might help you prepare for an angioplasty.

What is an angioplasty? Angioplasty is a procedure to improve blood flow in coronary arteries that have become narrow or blocked. It restores blood flow to the heart muscle without open-heart surgery. A long, thin tube (catheter) is put into a blood vessel and guided to the blocked coronary artery. Once the catheter is in place, a balloon is inflated at the narrowed area of the heart artery. This presses the plaque or blood clot against the sides of the artery, making more room for blood flow. Angioplasty is often combined with the placement of a small wire mesh tube called a stent. The stent helps prop the artery open, decreasing its chance of narrowing again.

Stents

Coronary stents are now used in nearly all angioplasty procedures. A stent is a tiny, expandable metal mesh coil. It is put into the newly opened area of the artery to help keep the artery from narrowing or closing again.

Once the stent has been placed, tissue will start to coat the stent like a layer of skin. The stent will be fully lined with tissue within 3 to 12 months, depending on if the stent has a medicine coating or not. You may be prescribed medicines called antiplatelets to decrease the "stickiness" of platelets. Platelets are special blood cells that clump together to stop bleeding. The medicine can also prevent blood clots from forming inside the stent. Your healthcare team will give specific instructions on which medicines need to be taken and for how long.

Most stents are coated with medicine to prevent scar tissue from forming inside the stent. These stents are called drug-eluting stents (DES). They release medicine within the blood vessel that slows the overgrowth of tissue within the stent. This helps prevent the blood vessel from becoming narrow again. Some stents don't have this medicine coating and are called bare metal stents (BMS). They may have higher rates of stenosis, but they don't require long-term use of antiplatelet medicines. This may be the preferred stent in people who are at high risk of bleeding.

Because stents can become blocked, it's important to talk with your healthcare team about what you need to do if you have chest pain after a stent placement.

If scar tissue does form inside the stent, you may need a repeat procedure. This may be using either balloon angioplasty or with a second stent. In some cases, radiation therapy may be given through a catheter placed near the scar tissue to stop the growth of scar tissue and open up the vessel. This is called brachytherapy.

surely the body eats away at the stint as it is a foreign body, how long do they last and how are they strong enough to keep the blood vessel open while weak enough to be opened by the balloon

Hi doc thank you for this informative video. I have a question, after you got the procedure can you back to your normal routine and if you are athlete or play your sports can you go back? Or there is already a limitation with that? Thank you for your response ahead doc.

This might be a silly question. You mentioned that after inserting a catheter inside a clogged or semi-collapsed artery (due to plaque on both sides), pressure is applied against the artery walls in order to keep it open (before placing the stent). Aren't there chances of the artery bursting due to this pressure as it's already constricted with plaque or due to lost flexibility from plaque buildup? Also, is the plaque removed before doing this?

so you must take medicine forever to keep blood clots from forming again near the stent?
also, how can i decrease the chances of blocked blood vessels? I'm relatively very safe weight, but i know even thin people or slightly overweight can still have heartattacks
which is scary.

I do not eat fatty foods, if i do, it's maybe only a couple of times per month, not much at all
