Interesting primer on robotic mowers, and the Gardena Sileno is a good budget pick if you don't want to stretch to the best mower on the market, which is the Husqkvarna robomower series. BUT there is a BIG caveat to this video: it's WAY more complicated than this video gives you the impression of. Almost all yards and lawns are more complex than shown here, with bushes, trees, paths and different zones. Laying the wire is definitely NOT child's play, and shouldn't be done by a child. The distance to the edge has to be precisely measured to prevent the mower falling off the edge, and be prepared to use three times (!) as many plugs (stakes) as they say in the instructions. Most lawns are quite uneven and you need a stake every 3" or so. Keep the wire taut during installation and fix it deep into the ground, to stop the mower blades from cutting the wire. The base station needs to be installed way more securely that shown in the video, and it needs to be firmly screwed down to the ground and not bent, uneven or even sloping a little. It can't go in a corner and you also need a third guide wire in the middle to show the mower the way home. Expect there to be a lot of teething problems to begin with, and you may well have to adjust the placement of the wire to stop your mower falling or getting stuck. Be prepared to spend some weeks learning your mower's behavior and adjusting the wire and settings until you get it right. Finally, you'll never be able to completely avoid mowing your lawn again because you still need to trim all the edges and spots the mower can't reach by hand with a trimmer. NEVER LET THE MOWER operate at night (as suggested in the video) as it will KILL HEDGEHOGS and other nocturnal wild animals who defend themselves by curling up in a ball instead of running away. Keep it to daylight hours only, and program the timer to cut a couple of hours after sunrise, to let the morning dew dry up first. The whole base station and mower must be moved indoors during the winter, and reinstalled in the spring. P.S. This comment is written from experience and installing this exact same mower.

As I get older, this type of mowing starts to look better and better. Thanks for sharing your experiences and insights without any hype.

These are interesting. That pattern was crazy! They should make one that can do a few trim passes, then just go back and fourth. Looking forward to seeing how these mowers progress in the industry. The Neato robotic vacuum does a good job of doing a trim pass and then going back and fourth, and it leaves awesome carpet stripes!

Oh I love how you have your little girl helping you out and you’re teaching her. I have a little girl who is almost 13.

We live in a good neighborhood, still kids and teenagers like to ride scooter or bike that they found on the front yards, also we have packages 📦 stolen, that means you lucky if this thing last this summer, I think is good for the backyard!!

I had one, it is a very good product. I sold it anyway because I was tired of having a robot running through my garden all day for something I can easily do myself in 20 minutes twice a week. But my garden is much more difficult for a robot than yours because it's very elongated with more corners, so the mower has to do a lot more of those random turns than in a more or less square garden. Had to learn that for myself and sold it to a guy with one of those easier gardens who's very happy with the Gardena.

I used a robotic mower for a season. Good for those who don’t obsess over lawn care and just want it mowed. Some downsides are 1) troubleshooting breaks in the wire can be very difficult without special equipment, 2) can leave ruts in the lawn as they tend to use the same track to navigate its way home, 3) challenging to set it up so that it’ll cut a lawn separated by a fence, walkway or driveway. In the end it just wasn’t for me.

In a few years the cost of these will go down. Can't wait.

My problem with that more is that it mows without a specific pattern and it does not look good when you have a big yard and you can see where the lawn mower has been. If you are trying to keep the grass cut and don't care how the grass looks then that lawn mower is okay they make that similar lawn mower that does things without being random and looks a lot better

If I had one, lawn thieves would have it on Facebook marketplace a few hours after install.

Watching this video after giving up on getting my mower started after doing about 1/10th of the yard. Hmmm, I think if my husband won’t mow regularly I deserve this or a landscape service. $999 sounds good to me!

This is a really well-done video. Well-presented verbally, great videos to follow and sensible commentary. Thank you.

Ok so I went quite down in the comments and saw no one ask about edging. So what about edging and the area the mower can't reach due to the wire?

Of all people to have in-use outdoor outlet covers, I would have thought you were one. Video idea!

It will take a lot longer but a step on edger is a must if you want to bury the wire so you can dethatch without worrying about hitting the guide wire
