Barracuda with a 318 2bbl !!! Try a 426 Hemi they run 11.70's when new when they could hook..440 6bbl high 11's 12 flat..440 4bbl ran mid 12's...383 and 340's high 12's low 13's.

A magazine back in the day tested a new Challenger same as a Barracuda/Cuda with a 383 low compression (as they had different heads, cam, crank than a 383 4bbl and the 383 4bbl was different than the 383 4bbl high performance)

Anyways the new stock 383 2 barrel, 2.76 rear axle Challenger for 1971 the lowest power for the 383, the car ran 6.7 0-60 and 14.6 - 14.8 in the 1/4 mile..Why you ask that the times were quicker than Hemi, 440, 383, 340...Was simple, the purely hooked up and had traction and booked it !!! The other engines sat and spun the tires and would do so for minimum 100 feet !! 440 and 426 Hemi cars would grab rubber upon shifts once it did hook !

318's were funny as people dont understand they came with two different carburetors, both 2 barrels...This is why the same car some will say it doesnt move, others say its not that bad...20 hp difference between the 2 carburetors, sounds like no way but, it it...One wont open up and wont allow the engine to rev it seems like its holding back...I know I owned 2 1973 Dodge Charger's with the 318 2bbl both 2.76 axle ratio, same, same..Except carburetors..One was bought new in Washington state the other Indiana ! One charger would have 6 car lengths on the other, this was 1979 and both were fairly new..I owned a dealer then and now..The 318 2bbl ran 15.75 in the 1/4 the slower one ran 16.89 to 17 flat !! I have all my times written down in my black book from day 1..My Uncle ran the local drag strip thus we ran cars down the track for decades by ourselves !! We had a awesome time, bunch of buddies racing our cars around on our own ! Our other buddy was a riot, great commentator in the tower lol, that was a hell of a time !

A magazine back when the car was new took a 440 4bbl Cuda down the track, it burnt rubber down the whole track with the 195 70 series wide tread 14 inch bias ply tires...The added a 10 inch slick thats equal to a new radial tire and the car ran low 12's..Car was dead stock, 3.23 or 3.54 gear wasnt a low gear either !

My stock 68 Charger RT 440 Magnum, 727 auto with 3.23 gears ran 12.40's in the 1/4 in 1980 with radial tires, headers and after market re jetted carburetor, engine was none stock..

In 1972 when i bought the pristine stock Charger, it ran high 12's low 13's with a good burn out to heat the stock 195 75 series bias ply white wall tires it came with !! Remember SKINNY tires in all road tests and the tracks had no compounds like today !!!

in 1976 I bought the widest tires around Pro trac bias ply 275 tires, Iran 12.70's - 12.80's depending on humidity of the day..The car was 100% stock with original points !!! I cleaned the stock spark plugs !! It wasnt my daily driver..

Now, the car has the original 440 magnum rebuilt on a stand and I have a 1976 440 thats a 505 stroker that runs low mid 11's at 130 mph with 295 60 15's.. Car has no traction lol, the same engine in my Buddies 69 Coronet runs mid 8's ! Albeit he has 4.56's and rollcage, mini-tubbed but still fairly complete stock looking car, modified suspension so it can hook..

Now can they beat my hellcat no..but a 16 second Barrracuda is a 318 car or a shot big block or shot 340..

1974 360 Challenger brand new could run 13.9 in the 1/4 and 5.9 0-60 ! Remember they were 3600 pound cars !

71 Cuda is my favorite muscle car of all time and love this convertible, although I thought that it would do better in the 1/4. It doesn't say what motor was in it but even with a 340 it should have clocked in at around 14 sec, so something wasn't right. I thought that the cat would kill it but still should have done better.

Before you're too hard on the old car, please realize that throughout most of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, these old cars were some of the fastest cars around.

You just got to love that luggage rack on the back of the fish lol.

Nice shooting, and nice cars. That said, I'd take the 'Cuda, but boy is that Hellcat a biter - she really goes, man!

I'm confused why people in the comments are talking shit comparing a car from the 70s to modern engineering lol that Cuda is nice tho

I say old school vs new school it's Mopar we're all in it together to be the best

That hellcat is insanely consistent MPH wise. 116 every single pass.

I'm so glad they paused it once the hellcat crossed the line cause we definitely didn't have enough time to read it..

The Hellcat is a great car but even though it was slower and older and won't corner or stop as well, I'd still rather go home with the Cuda.

Something went wrong with that Baracuda. My dad had a 70 challenger that he would pull sub 12s in and he said the Cudas would tear him up with sub 11s. I get the altitude thing but something isn't right with that run. I was impressed Roman got those Hellcat tires to lock up that quick.

Unfair matching. Seems like the Cuda had a factory engine in it while the hellcat pushing 700 hp

The old Cuda has more style, even though it's got a Straight 6

I love the cuda it's my dream car but dude it had no torque when it took off none I've seen builds that go 130 and spin all the way there

i could't see the single exhaust, but im guessing its a 318 car

The new Challengers are cool cars (especially the Hellcat) but that deep bottom/undercarriage is annoying. The lines from the 70 are a million times better.

cuda had 6 different engines by that time, so what engine that one has?
