Do you think Greece's Euro 2004 triumph was the biggest upset in the sport's history?

From your analysis, Seitaridis looked likeca god at that tournament.. Having to man mark Zidane, Nedved and Ronaldo and participating in key attack plays.. That's an impressive feat

Being Greek myself and having lived through this, albeit at the tender age of 10, I can still remember not one man bothered to analyze tactics. Fans were delirious for even participating, and the major news outlets having had their alliances set out openly by then, were demoralized by calling the Greek side "boring to watch" and that they "killed the beautiful open game" that was blooming back then.

All I can say is that Atletico Madrid used a similar plan to reach two UCL finals about 10 years after Greece's success, and everyone praised both their "unorthodox" dominance without possession, and were rooting for them to win the whole thing.

Meanwhile, this now-retired Greek side, still playing international friendlies for charities and such, are still putting out a disciplined display, without having their Otto in their ranks. This only goes to show the players themselves are intelligent and hungry enough to put on a great display every time they set their foot on the pitch, regardless of the cause.

I've had the chance to speak with Charisteas about two summers ago, and he highlighted exactly that personal drive and strong belief in their manager's game and in on each other. You don't see that bring up such extraordinary results too often, and should definitely not be discarded as just "a lucky break".

It always makes me nostalgic to remember just how freakin stacked Euro 2004 was. So many teams had legitimate world-class players. How many teams were in the midst of a golden generation or at the beginning of a golden generation? (Minus Germany of course) Zidane, Henry, Nedved, Czech, Beckham, Rooney, Gerrard, Figo, Ronaldo, Davids, Stam, Van Nistelrooy, Robben, Raul, Torres, Xavi, Puyol, Pirlo, Totti, Cannavaro, Buffon, Larsson. Holy shit.

Transformation from 4-3-3 to 5-3-2 and 5-4-1 was incredible. Really clever ways to defence and gain advantages on transitions!

Really, as a Greek all I can say is, this is a 10/10 video; many europeans think it was all a fluke back then in 2004 - but almost nobody gave Otto' s team the credit they deserved for their tactical brilliance & versatility. Having worldclass players makes playing the beautiful game much easier, but Greece never had that chance (there were actually some gifted players but they were either physically weak or they never embraced the ''team comes first'' mentality) so they had to adapt.
By the way, Otto Rehhagel is easily one of the 20 best managers in football history; he had made Werder regular Bundesliga & won them a Cup Winners Cup, he won the Bundesliga with Kaiserslautern a year after they were promoted, and last but not least the Euro 2004 achievement. Here in Greece Herr Otto is unanimously loved and cherished :)

Great analysis mate well done, , the strategic plan started with Portugal at the premiere actually that's when King Otto deep it into the players head and said that's the plan, discipline, hard work and Hellenic passion. Cheers from Melbourne great video mate

Rehhagel's tactics were old fashioned but also ahead of his time ...somehow...This was before Guardiola and the Age of Modern Football where Coaches&tactics are everything

Just found this channel and wow amazing work bro! Haven’t seen tactical analysis like this on YouTube and as someone pretty knew to getting super invested into the sport it’s super cool. I’m a huge Barca fan and just finished watching your vid on why Barca won’t win the CL this season, could you do a video on what you personally think should happen with the construction of the squad? Like you take over and look to maximize messis last years, the sort of adjustments you’d make (maybe moving de jong to the pivot, bringing in new midfield profiles, perhaps new fullbacks, a different style. Would be super interesting! Keep up the awesome work bro! 🙏🏼🙏🏼

And don't forget Otto Rehagel brought the newly promoted Kaisersautern to be the Bundesliga Champion.

Judging by the available chances teams had against greece, this was a miracle.

The defence was superb but they practiced the penalty shootout and corner kick alot during training just in case and it worked.

Before lampard crosses to terry was a thing,
This team was the THING.
