A young man who wanted to be a butler would of spent a couple of years as a scullery boy and worked his way up to being a footman and then an underbutler and finally he would become a full butler when the current butler retired or an opening for a butler in another household became available and he was seen as being ready for the job.

Surprisingly quite an accurate picture of private service for hire, although I did notice the lack of gloves while handling items for the table setting, it's usually desired to avoid touching the utensils or napkins (anything that comes into contact with food or the mouth) for hygiene reasons
