The Electric State: Netflix Thinks You're Stupid

The Possum tells you about The Electric State, the latest sci-fi comedy about a robotic peanut which Netflix decided to inflict upon the world.

This one just hurts. The original worldbuilding project is simply amazing. And in a cruel twist of fate, the most Electric State thing possible happened to it and it got turned into lowest common denominator Netflix slop.

As a huge fan of the book, this movie hurts me on a spiritual level. It is an utter bastardization of everything that made the original so amazing. Let me just go over a few of the things they changed for those unfamiliar:

-In the book, the setting itself is the focus, with the characters being a way for the book to explore the various locations of the world seamlessly
-The mascot robots serve the exact opposite role: They're things that were once supposed to be cheery and appealing, but are now nothing but hollow metal husks that litter the landscape, whatever purpose they once held long gone
-The world is a cold, dead wasteland. Society is all but gone. The characters aren't heroes on an epic quest, they're scavengers coming in after the fall has already happened. If you've played a game like Dark Souls or Hollow Knight, its kind of similar
-The headsets in the book were portrayed less like a device and more like a highly addictive, deadly drug. Most of the times its seen, its on the head of someone who starved themselves to death while mindlessly binging online content.
-Oh yeah, the ENTIRE PLOT of the movie is completely made up. Seriously. All of the stuff with the robots being marginalized is completely new

Ironically, the 90s was the first anti-consumerism generation, and instead of using the most popular music from the time, grunge, they chose very consumer friendly pop music from the 80s.

The funny thing is that 5:50 you nail what original book was about

In the Electric State graphic novel the robots are not actual corporate mascots that readers would recognize, instead they are fancifully generic mascots that are both familiar and strange. There's something hauntingly creepy about the graphic novel, but the feeling is destroyed when you insert an actual corporate mascot into a movie. Mr. Peanut is the proof that no one really cared about creating a movie that captures the spirit of the novel. The Saturday morning cartoon "Cubix" from 2001 has more creative talent behind it than this movie, in my opinion.

I saw an ad for this. Immediately assumed it was one of planters marketing stunts like that stupid baby peanut and wrote it off instantly. Didnt even know it was a movie.

As a 2D/3D Senior Artist I can't help but notice the insane amount of work that went into creating all these robots.. animations.. vfx.. digital sets.. for no payoff at all

Best thing about the Electric State movie is bring attention to the book. Just ordered a copy for myself.
