I don’t think yu yu hakusho is an isekai because he doesn’t go to a new world, yusuke doesn’t go to a new world, he die’s and comes back then he discovers that his world has fantasy elements in it. But his world already had this fantasy elements in it before his accident. So not an isekai

Is inuyasha in a different world though? I always thought of it just being a different time period when fantasy stuff was more prevalent in the world.

My favorite Isekai is A Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain.

Spirited Away - Arguably an Isekai, though the protagonist’s goal is to flee this new world to be reunited with her family.
Yu Yu Hakusho- Absolutely not an Isekai, Yusuke returns to the human world, and stays in touch with his human connections, more Urban Fantasy
Inuyasha - absolutely an Isekai, Kagome fully becomes part of the other world

It's like saying cartoons/American animated shows are anime. The Fandoms dislike you saying it is something even though by definition it is that thing. It's really odd to me that people put weird rules on things that the creators of things don't because of their perception of the world or fantasy of another country. Anime from my understanding literally translates to animation, so anything animated could be considered an anime. Manga is translated to comic or comic strip, so manga and comics are the same although there are small differences in style based on region just like the anime thing. But even within anime and Manga you have wide differences in styles. Some like: wide eye anime girls, others like dark brooding mysterious small slits for eyes, and others like a mix of both or even realistic proportions. Meanwhile, American comic based shows can have very boxy defined Jaw lines or no jaw line at all.

So class, what have we learned? That's right, people say stupid things for odd reasons. Including us, we are all human.

Isekai now lose its meaning because of the oversatured thropy powerfantasies. The word isekai literally means another world so yeh spirit away, yu yu Hakusho and inuyasha (even tho that is more of a time travel) are isekai. You can even say bleach is an isekai.

I agree ! Even these where they aren't reincarnate. Because, the MC of Re:Zero didn't die, he was teleported in the fantasy world. You can also add Digimon and The vision of escaflowne. But, why aren't they negatively connoted ? Perhaps, they aren't a pale imitation of each other, with extra long title.

I like shoujo isekai (the current ones) compared to the shounen ones.
Don't get me wrong, I loved konosuba, taye no yusha, th spider one and cautious hero.
But I genuinely enjoy stuff like bakarina, the 300 slime one, etc. And kenja no mago felt shoujo, if that makes sense.
I'm really looking forward to the Raelina one.
You may say I watch too many isekai. Well that's what they make these days.
And I also read them.

Isekai : main character from modern day Japan gets transported to another world. they don't have to die first.

Spirited away is close to the border but still counts as one because there's no indication as to when she crosses into the spirit realm but it becomes very apparent that it's happened anyway.

Likewise it doesn't matter if technology is used or magic that was curated on Earth perhaps, such as with escaflowne.

Reverse izaki is when you have someone from a fantastical world who gets trapped in modern-day Japan: such as the devil is a part-timer.

But three main restrictions apply:

Traveling back and forth is limited or impossible.

The main character effectively breaking the new world they travel to based on the technology, thought processes or the know-how they brought with them.

The main character may have some relation to the other world, but regardless of that connection remains completely foreign to it.

Thus a show like Magus bride is not an isekai because despite the fact that she's transported fairly often (quite literally) she was actually part of the realm of magic from the start and belongs to that realm, even though she didn't know it. Likewise her unique thought processes absolutely change nothing and she must adapt to being part of a realm she was always supposed to be part of.
