It’s funny that we’ve seen this type of thing happening to a lot of older companies. When something new came into the market they dominated in, they found it stupid and rejected it, and now, they’re on a decline!

This is what happens when ya stick with old school.

Edit: Geez, thanks guys for the 1K likes.

Rochester, NY native here, my grandfather was a lead engineer for Kodak. I can’t recall what position he actually held but he was quite high up. He told me about the entire situation with the digital cameras, but he also explained that wasn’t the only factor. Kodak’s R&D divisions created early models of modern printers, and a whole slew of other technology but the board of directors just continuously sold off patents for a quick buck. It was so bad that my grandfather ended up retiring around the late 80’s early 90’s and sold all of his stock. One of Kodak’s bigger tech parks in Greece, NY has been partially demolished and most of it has been sold off to other companies. Its quite sad as Kodak was one of the big contributors to us being a small but quite well off city and none of the other tech companies from Rochester like Paychex or Harris Communications have been able to fill their shoes. As a result the city went from one of the few growing rust belt cities to a mostly stagnant population growth rate.

This is what happens when a bunch of well-fed unwilling one-foot-in-the-grave executives are in charge. They stick to their guns, avoid innovation and miss out on possible market domination. Not that it really matters, considering they'll probably be sent to Jesus a year later

Kodak is still one of the kings in the film tho. Film is their thing.

Fun fact: Kodak sold cameras secretly to the nazi's while Polaroid sold to the alies.

They just afraid the digital camera will cut into their film market. Little do they know, it cut them out completely.

You're missing something. A huge part of their revenue came from film sales. They hated the idea because they didn't have enough foresight, and they thought making a camera that didn't require film would lose them tons of money.

What everyone seems to miss is that Kodak did actually make early professional digital cameras. They took Nikon film SLRs and made digital backs for them. They then sold these to photojournalists. When Nikon started making DSLRs, they couldn’t compete by doing this anymore.

They also made the full frame CCD sensor for the Leica M9, and were a partner in the Four Thirds alliance (which would eventually spawn Micro Four Thirds). They did commit to digital, but they weren’t able to compete with the current camera giants of Nikon and Canon, who had a massive head start in that pro photographers had a lot of their gear, and it would have taken a massive effort to offer a full set of accessories, and then convince them all to convert. They could have done it, but would have been a massive undertaking. It’s not as simple as “oh kodak invented the digital camera but wanted to stick to their old ways”

I remember these use to be so popular when I was a kid. Man, good times.

It wasn't stagnant innovation. It was incompetent executives. A big difference.
