Snow at Athens Airport ❄️ 23-26 January 2022 - Blizzard ⚡️'Elpida'

Показать описание
Scenes selection of Athens airport operations during and after the heavy snowstorm.
Mixed 4K footage from four different days (23 to 26 January 2022).
A quick snowstorm passed through the airport on Sunday 23/1/2022 morning and lasted for a few minutes.
The heavy blizzard started the next day, Monday 24 January morning and lasted all day. Airport remained opened for most of the time, with temporary closures due to runway and taxiways snow removals. Also on 24/1 night, a problem with ILS (glide slope) affected few arrivals. Of course flights diverted to other Greek airports due to extremely low visibility during the heavy snowstorm.
However, despite the efforts of the airport to stay operational, it was pointless, since the highway and the railway leading to the airport closed for days. So neither the crews, airport employees nor the passengers could reach the terminal. That was the main reason of flight cancellations.
Athens Airport was the most well prepared service provider, compared to anyone else in the country, to face ANY kind of severe weather conditions.
They performed several exercises and simulations for winter operations, weeks before even knowing that a blizzard such as “Elpida” will hit the country.
