In the 1960s, the B-1 was first envisaged as a vehicle that would combine the B-58 Hustler's Mach 2 speed with the B-52's range and payload, and was planned to eventually replace both bombers. Rockwell International (now part of Boeing) won the design contest for what emerged as the B-1A following a long series of trials. This version had a high-altitude top speed of Mach 2.2 and the ability to fly at very low altitudes over long distances at Mach 0.85. The need for the B-1 was all greatly influenced by the combination of the high cost of the aircraft, the launch of the AGM-86 cruise missile flying the same basic profile, and early development on the stealth bomber.
