In The Field: Vertical Panoramas #278

Many landscape photographers, myself included, recognize when a panorama is needed. However, I sometimes overlook opportunities for vertical panoramas. That’s the topic for this week’s video, and I have some footage from Wakayama, Japan where I am glad I remembered to take a few frames for a vertical panorama.

Scott, great reminder to do vertical pano and shoot in portrait ordination to provide the width and of course shoot horizontal panos in portrait ordination. We have and use a 17mm and 24mm TS for our architecture work and find them great for landscape photography shooting panos vertically and horizontally. The problem with them when traveling is that we reduce our kits to a manageable lighter-weight setup and the TS lenses are big and heavy so they usually don't make it in the pack. My wife and I each carry a pack and share lenses. We have found that between our two packs when traveling we have 12-24, 16-35, 24-70, 70-200. They are all fast glass so still big and just no room for T/S. My wife also always carries the Zeiss 35 f2.0 which is tiny and her favorite lens. Add in the Lee filter kits and tripods, extra batteries, remote shutter releases and even our slim kits are still not that slim.  Maybe one day the iPhone will really do it all. It is so tough dealing with our 1st world problems;0)

I can't wait for the live edit. If it winds up not being a live edit, no worries. I'm still tuning in. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm not at all bothered or tired of seeing your footage from your trip to Japan. As always, thanks for the share, and I'll see you later this week. Cheers Scott!

I have not as yet done any vertical panos looking forward to "in-post" this week (as I do each week)! Live edit, yes please!! Oh, and I think "Pacific-ally" is quite apropos! ;0)

Great tip Sir. And never get tired of seeing your awesome pics.
Personally I would, if possible, have used a 50 mm and done 4 shots. 2 low and 2 high. But that depends on the distance to the gate.
Looking forward to seeing the edit of the pic
