I was in a hot tub once 30 years ago. No drugs, no alcohol, quite warm. I immediately became so dizzy, i popped out and just dangled my feet. Never again.

What I learn here: never ever be in a hot tub alone

I’m actually shocked not more people die in hot tubs. I had a friend come extremely close to passing out in a hot tub when we were drinking alcohol. We got him out of the hot tub and layed them out on the ground, and he soon recovered. His blood pressure likely bottomed out. It was so scary though! He easily could have passed out and drowned had he been alone.

Thank you for this video, Dr. Mike! My grandma was having a glass of wine in the jacuzzi and she suddenly got dizzy and had to be assisted out of the jacuzzi and into the house. Thank goodness she wasn’t alone!! You’ve done a great service to us all by discussing the dangers of hot tubs and why. RIP Matthew Perry! ✌🏼💖

I knew a man who was just in his late 40s who I was told had a heart condition that after a night of drinking went home and took a very hot shower and then went to bed but suffered a heart attack and passed away. I had just met him a few days before and it was so shocking bc he was young and looked healthy. It was in China and the Chinese people I was staying with told me that there is a belief that one should never take a hot shower while drunk as it could lead to heart failure. At the time I thought it might be an old wive’s tale meant to discourage drinking but now I wonder if there is any truth to that.

I had a patient once who fainted in a hot tub. He had the perfect storm of causative factors. Luckily, he was not alone. He was dehydrated, drinking alcohol, and gets in a hot tub for a long time. If you are dehydrated, then expand your “vascular bed” with heat and alcohol, you are going to end up with not enough blood pressure to perfuse the brain. If you are in the hot tub alone, chances are you will die.

So shocked and saddened that Matthew has died. He is a dear friend of my friends and gave them a fabulous start to their married life decades ago and into recovery and addiction counselling. He made a difference and will be sorely missed. Fame was thrust upon a very insular but talented individual and how Matt chose to cope with it is a route many take to try and stop the doubting loop in their mind that they are not good enough and never will be. Learning to know you are better than all the self loathing and negative feedback back you had growing up with, is the first step back to a whole person. 🥺🙏🏼❤️

I almost died in my bathtub form a hot bath. I was about to pass out, and as my vision closed in just like those old movie endings I realized I would just drown, had about a second to realize and act, I managed to swing an arm out and have my upper body over the edge of the tub. Very scary.

Can't believe he survived all of that to then die because of a hot tub bath after a pickleball game. It's like a cruel joke.

Thirty six years ago in our new home we put a jacuzzi in our master bathroom. My mom & husband & kids were downstairs and I decided to use it. Was in it for about forty five minutes and decided to get out . I felt dizzy, my legs were like jello and had a hard time getting out. I screamed but no one could hear me. I crawled out and crawled to the hallway and finally someone noticed me. I NEVER used the jacuzzi again. I still recall my panic!

This is a real thing. Hot tubs should be used with caution and never alone. I have low blood pressure naturally. When I was 20 I sat in a hot tub for too long, no alcohol involved, I felt faint so I had good enough sense to get out, but upon doing so, I then fainted and fell flat on my face. Busted my lip and had a bruised ego because my brand new neighbors had to care for me. Thank God I wasn’t alone, and that’s all that happened. This is very sad and he will be missed and remembered for his mark in the TV hall of fame!

Story… I had hurt my back. My wife said I should get in to a hot bath. Just before I got in, She gave me a Soma (Muscle relaxer). When the H20 cooled off, I got my self out of the Tub. I was only able to start to towel off before everything in my vision went too gray. I tried to step to our Bed before my legs gave out. I fell prone on to the floor. I was sweating profusely. My wife said I was complete ashend and my Heart rate was in the 30’s. She called 911. The medic said I was in a junctional rhythm without signs of an AMI. I was released after 4 hours in the ED and 1 liter of NS by IV. Something about Vasodilation from the Hot H2O and the Muscle Relaxer making the tank bigger than my blood volume or heart could pump to my brain?

My dad had a heart attack in a hot tub in his late 30s at a health club. He had a stressful job and medically retired from the police department as a result of that incident. So glad he wasn’t alone when it happened.

I knew the mom whose daughter had been in a hot tube drinking a glass of wine while talking to her girlfriend on a cell phone. She had recently been given a script for a short acting benzo (Xanax). She was not a long term user of benzos. But she was under a lot of stress due recent bad news and other personal things we sometimes have in life. She was a happy late twenty year old person and not suffering from depression. After taking a Xanax and while sipping on a glass of wine while talking with her girlfriend, there was sudden silence. The girlfriend returned the phone call but kept getting voice messages. Being naturally concerned, the girlfriend called a nearby family member to check on the young lady. It turned out she passed out and slipped down into the hot-tub and drowned.
You would think the chocking gag response would have been enough to wake the young girl. But there was something about the hot water, the short-acting Xanax and the wine that caused this young lady to faint so deeply that even a choking gag response would not wake her. Unfortunately these things happen, even to upbeat happy people. The events are not always suicide.

I remember in Dallas during the 1980 heat wave there were PSA’s telling people not to use their pools if the water got too hot. People were drowning by passing out while seeking relief in their backyard pools.

Ive fallen asleep in just a regular bath. I have no idea what the temperature of the water was, but it can happen so easily. Such an unnecessary loss! RIP Matthew

Perry had been unusually fatigued all week. On the day of his death he cut short his pickleball game (he loved this game and played everyday; sometimes twice a day) due to fatigue. That was unusual and a red flag. Perry may have fell asleep because he was so fatigued and accidentally drowned in his hot tub.

Always good to listen to Dr. Mike Hansen's talk. Thank you very much!

He played pickle ball that day, and had noted that he had been really fatigued for a week. I’m sure he had a heart attack and drowned, but I’m sure the coroner would been able to see it. Poor Matthew. He WILL be remembered as someone who wanted to be remembered for helping others who had addictions/were alcoholic. His book will no doubt save millions. Rest with the angels, Matthew. 💫💜🙏💫❤
