I TOTALLY agree with this lady’s stance on children. Proverbs 22:6 says, Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

This woman is a breath of fresh air. Reminds me of how my primary school education was. As a child I didn't understand the importance of what she is saying, but now living in our current society, I recognize the importance of instilling correct values in children.

Been a while since I've seen someone pushing back on his ideas and saying he is wrong. I love Peterson because he seeks those people out who don't exactly agree with him.

Kudos to both of you

as a past teacher, I'm excited to hear this interview. I always thought education should be a process of safe boundaries dictated by the teacher not a system that doesn't know anything about individual children.. Parents often forget about the process of learning. LOVE your elegant jacket by the way. The common sense of this lady is gratifying.

I agree with what she saying on the most part, but what confuses me is I grew up with parents who gave me no choices on anything and it took me decades to find my voice. I was so afraid/anxious to make decisions and became a yes person, especially around authority, even when I really wanted to say no and being taken advantage of, and it got me into trouble. Took me until my 30s, therapy and experiencing the negative consequences of always doing what your told to find my assertive voice and have boundaries.

I now give my children clear consistent boundaries and limits, but balance that with allowing them to practice making simple decisions and helping them explore their motivations and needs and how to communicate them respectfully.

I grew up with no guidance, rules or restrictions. I just tried my best to make good decisions and I did okay. I have children and I consider my husband and my guidance and rules to be one of the most valuable gifts I can give my children. Without oversight you often feel like no one cares about you and you feel alone. Love is setting limits.

I raised my kids just like this lady is saying. Now I’m reaping a very good harvest. Thank you, God. I told my son don’t worry about chores. “When you come home from school food will be ready, meals and snacks, clean environment etc…I just need you to focus on school.” He brought straight A’s every year. When he was 17 I told him it’s time to do chores. I didn’t even have to teach him because he’d seen it from me over the years. And then I taught him how to cook when he’s 19. Now he’s 24 and fully independent. Already have job close to 6 figures and will be graduating from mechanical engineering this year. All this to say, it’s not my doing. I ask God everyday for wisdom on how to raise my kids. To Him be the glory and honor.

I'm just learning about Katharine Birbalsingh at this very moment, and I'm utterly amazed and delighted by her philosophy! This was my parents' way of parenting (50s & 60s), and there was nothing unkind or radical about it at all. They weren't perfect, but their way gave us boundaries and expectations, and my peers' parents did the same with them. I see parents now try to placate and please and try to give multiple choices to their children, while trying to be their friend. How have things changed so radically in child raising?! Perhaps there is hope for raising better kids and citizens. Bravo, Ms. Birbalsingh!

When I was a little kid, I didn't like one of the vegetables that I had to eat. My dad saw this, and told me the importance of vegetables, and told me that I have to eat vegetables. He then pointed to the encyclopedias, and told me that if I found a vegetable with equivalent or better nutrition, then we could eat that one. And that's what I did, and that's what happened.

Many of the things Ms Birbalsingh indicates still exist in Guyana, the homeland of her father. Caribbean (West Indian) people have quietly been
contributing to British Society and we are very proud of Katherine Birbalsingh.

2:30 p.m. U.S. eastern time...36 year public school teacher...'Spot on" from one strict teacher to another. Children need knowledge to think critically and creatively. You are absolutely right on this! Jordan, I always agree with you. I enjoy watching you listen as well as speak. Please listen carefully so you can help our school educate children with good old common sense. We must save our public schools before it's too late...if it isn't already. Keep listening. She is right!
