This is so true. Four way stops take forever. In driver's ed, the teacher told us the proper procedure for who goes when at a four-way stop. But then he said, if someone looks like they really want to go, let them go. Just let them go.

It's like that here on an island near Seattle. We have a bumper sticker that says"no, you go".

YES! Being a rational, aggressive, northeast driver driving in the south, I'm constantly yelling, "Just GO! It IS YOUR TURN!!!"

THANK YOU for this. Jersey for 35 years, in the South for 15 years, and this explains everything. I’ve adapted for quite some time now, but needed this exposition to help me figure out why.

He is dead-on right about the 4-2ay Stop. People literally wave their hands and smile, alllowing others to 'come on through'.
Another funny aspect of my wonderful South, is that most people don't honk their horn. Someone can be touching up her lipstick in her rear view mirror and miss the green light, but nobody will honk.

I live in the northeast and I went to North Carolina for the first time 3 years ago and I fell in love with it. People are so gentlely polite. I wish I can move there. But I don't want to tinted them.

We visited Tennessee and, indeed, learned the meaning of Southern Hospitality. Yes, very nice people.

Actually I'm also from Tennessee and I would have to say people from TN are especially polite among all southerners ... because we're a tourist state. Tourism is the states #1 GDP. Literally the leaders made it be how our state taxes are paid.

And TVA made a lot of our land state & national national parks around, where hydro-electric dams were built. So a lot of fishing, boating, camping, water skiing, ...

All these lakes, rivers, dams, parks & mountains are major tourist destinations.

Plus all the "hillbilly" attractions we could add in. Cause when TVA started creating scenic parks & lakes (right when cars & campers were getting good enough for long-distance family vacations)

Yeah, we totally understood the assignment.

So we made a lot of fun tourist attractions/stops along the way ... replete with clean lodging, family entertainment, safe camp grounds, cabins, motels, rest areas, and local scenic attractions, caves, waterfalls, trails, natural sweet-water springs, natural fawna "zoos" (feeding black bears, and seeing panthers, cougars, bobcats/manx, elk, deer, raccoons, etc. ). And local wild honey, molasses, moonshine, kettle corn, and other local foods fresh and canned apples, peaches, sassafras, hard cider, ...

We made seasonal businesses just for selling & repairing boats & outboard motors, pontoons, fishing gear, water skiis, hunting, .... We strategically put our businesses at refueling & rest stops, and in FORKS OF THE ROADS ...
( right where you're gonna need directions🧭 😂 and coffee ☕️🥧, and maps 🗺 ...). So as part of our politeness, they're placed in the most convenient spots for our visitors, as we called them.

Also, we converted our family log cabins and antique tools and furnishings called them mountain museums where we also sold a lot of local foods, honey, and handmade gadgets and touristy items like miniature spoons, shot glasses, real baked-bean crockery pots, & roasted nuts, and authentic pioneer artifacts, like Daniel Boone hats, Indian toys, pioneer toys & wooden carvings, & cedar goods ...

It was a happy time growing up in a tourist area in Tennessee. 👋❤️⛰️⛰️🛶🚤🦨🦌🐎🐾👋😍

4-way stops are enough to drive a person to drink in the south. Some drivers must think if they get there first they get to wave everyone else on.

I was always the guy just going at a 4 way stop when we lived in the south 😂

40 years ago here in Spokane, Washington it used to feel like that!

Now it’s too fast, almost having a free for all speeding

It definitely depends on which part of the south! Nate is from middle Tennessee and I live in East Tennessee. In my small town this is absolutely true about four-way stops, but when I get on the interstate to go across town I feel like I'm fighting for my life to merge or change lanes 😂 I'm sure that's true of anywhere, though; there's polite people and rude people everywhere!
