Imagine losing the battle before the enemy even gets the chance to fire back.

In the beginning of cannons on ships, only 2 countries thought to put the canon on wheels. Everyone else thought it was a waste of resources and money and decided to mount each cannon to the deck.

Only the Chinese and the Prussians thought to make each cannon to be on a wheels and not mounted. It took other countries anywhere from 100 to 350 years to change their minds set on how cannons should be made and used on ships.

The funniest thing that was done was what the Russians used to do. Make the world’s largest cannon to put on a wooden ship in history over 50 times. 50 ships had a 60 ton cannon that when fired would rip the ship in half or blow itself up. In recorded history only one ship took 3 shots before the ship destroyed itself and only one ship was able to sink another ship period.

And then there was the issue of too many cannon making the ship top heavy, so if you turned with the lower gun ports open, the water rushed in and you capsized. See Vasa and Mary Rose.

Thought this was going to be about the rule that a Canon Maker had to shoot the first shot himself.

There's a fort I used to visit a lot as a child that has another example of people underestimating recoil.

The fort had multiple coastal artillery bunkers, and the first cannon to be installed was essentially bolted directly into the foundation with little room to move. Upon its first test fire, it proceeded to make a multiple feet long crack through the foundation.

For subsequent cannons, a large buffer was installed in the foundation behind the cannon mount.

Please talk about the "Kettering Bug"

what's funny to me is that you see this on a lot of pirate ship based toys where the cannons are bolted to the ship. It seems like we even see this is some old art of ships too.

They also had to learn to store the powder separately, giving us the magazine.

Now if only you could prevent the recoil and turn it all into energy for the cannonballs to fly farther.

So what you're saying is.. we could have used those tiny swivel guns bolted into the hull of the bow in large numbers to improve turning speed and make for passing by an energy vessel a potentially quick endeavor when armed with chain shot, if reinforced properly.. and that maybe on a modern vessel, a hull full of cannons is a little more doable, and applicable in space because theres less friction?

Where's the recoil going to go?

*INTO MY SHOULDER GAMER WHAT YOU MEAN!?*

Isn't this one of the reasons the British defeated the Spanish Armada? The British ships were much smaller, faster and more advanced, whereas the Spanish ships were gigantic, but slow, lumbering and had massive fixed guns that were a pain to reload. No idea if im remembering correctly, so please correct me if I'm wrong

Is this why they installed a whole volley; to 'spread' the recoil over many smaller cannons instead of ever increasing the size of one or a few Mother of All Barrels?

Then, after spatial capacity was reached, looking to improve the individual cannons to allow for bigger cannons once more.

Wasnt there an indian galleon that had a canon or two self detonate during a broadside

How exactly did they load and do maintenance on a gun that can't be moved?

Any record of a cannon destroy its own ship or this is just something that seems possible to you? People who designed battleship we’re not as ignorant as you may presume.

Have you covered dragons? Like why were they everywhere

Wasn't there a ship that had like 50 cannons but could only fire 25 at once because firing all of them would sink the ship and yes idk if this was a fever dream of mine or a real ship

if bolted on deck, how the heck did crew reload? cannot be Sir Francis Drake defeated the Spanish Armada with cannon bolted on ship decks..
