🎤 Lyrics: MGMT - Kids

[Intro]
Five, four, three, two, one, ah!

[Verse 1]
You were a child crawling on your knees toward it
Making mama so proud, but your voice is too loud
We like to watch you laughing
You pick the insects off plants, no time to think of consequences

[Chorus]
Control yourself, take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanted to be haunted
Control yourself, take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanted to be haunted

[Verse 2]
The water is warm, but it's sending me shivers
A baby is born crying out for attention
The memories fade like looking through a fogged mirror
Decision to decisions are made and not bought
But I thought this wouldn't hurt a lot, I guess not

[Chorus]
Control yourself, take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanted to be haunted
Control yourself, take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanted to be haunted
[Instrumental Break]

[Chorus]
Control yourself, take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanted to be haunted
Control yourself, take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanted to be haunted
Control yourself, take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanted to be haunted
Control yourself, take only what you need from it
A family of trees

I love reading comments on songs like this, because you get to see different memories that is attached to the song, and tiny glances into the person's life, thats whats most beautiful about music, is the memories it holds for people

Today I feel the want to go back to being a kid. Getting to see my friends everyday at school is something I cherished but it still feels like I took it for granted.

I faintly remember this being my dad’s ringtone before he died. This just brings back a lot of happy memories of him.

Comment edit: Thank you all for the love!! He passed 14 years ago, but his death still hurts even as I have come into adulthood. Grief doesn't go away overnight and the mourning process varies from person to person. It's a good thing for songs like this to exist since they bring back memories.

One of those songs I hadn't heard in years but it only takes two notes and it brings back so many memories! 💕

This song was my entire childhood and it makes me so sad to look back at all the things I missed growing up, all the experiences I never had

What I like about reading this comment section is how universal the nostalgia for this song is. And not just from its original release but often years later
For so many people, there was just a simpler time in our lives where we had this song playing over and over. Those simpler days are behind us but every time we hear this song we can visit them for a few minutes

This song makes me think of my childhood and makes me cry every time I listen to it I always dream to have a amazing daughter and treat her with every bit of respect and caring and kindness I can and that’s how it should be

This is the epitomy of humanity. The creation of a form of self expression, an artistic one, about the joy of having a child. This is what should bring us together. This is what should make us glad to be alive. God bless you everyone. Please pray for me and pray for one another. Love you all kind strangers.

This song gives me goosebumps and sense of profound sadness. 16 hour drive, natural disaster, heartbreak, being abandoned and alone. This comes on the radio when I reach my home state on a Daytona highway with all the lights from the amusement parks and cars. In the feels

I had a really dark time in life with this song. I'm glad I made it. I was so broken. Now it makes me tear up.

This song makes me sad for all the things I missed out on as a child and of aging.

This is my nostalgia song, it was literally my childhood. My dad would play this all the time along with foo fighters and the living end, but this is the one I specifically remember just stopping and listening to when it came on. Tbh it makes me kinda sad to think about because it reminds me of the house I grew up in before my parents divorced. Now I’m somewhere that doesn’t feel like it’s really my home and the only things I have to remind me of it are these songs.

This song always felt like a summer song. I remember blasting this through my earbuds for an hour while my mom drove us to Cedar Point during summer break.

This song makes me remember when my dad and I would play video games when I was younger. I don’t know why, but this song always seemed to come up and it always reminds me of those great times.

Summer 2013 it came out a few years earlier but it was still on the radio 24/7, simpler times

my memory of this song:
I was driving across south carolina to apply for a job in another town. I invited my long time friend to ride with me. He was a childhood friend and he was the type that no matter how much time had passed, we always clicked right back. it had been around 5 or 6 years since he moved and we went to different schools. He put this song on during the drive. it was nearing sunset and it was so good because we were the best of friends as kids and now we have grown up a bit and are enjoying our friendship again. Reminded me of simpler times. love this song.

We grew apart and certain people wound up driving a wedge between us and we havent talked for about two years now. We both share blame and I regret it and we both are too stubborn to reconnect but nothing lasts forever and sometimes you lose friends. its a part of life but with a song like this, you can remember the good times.

This song is so original. I love it. The video is like a bizarre David Lynch film but very ponderous. It's tough being a kid.

Our innocence was the blindfold that veils our eyes from the darkness that lurks.
